  {"id":18473,"date":"2022-03-30T15:01:00","date_gmt":"2022-03-30T07:01:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/friends\/?p=18473"},"modified":"2025-07-24T12:38:48","modified_gmt":"2025-07-24T04:38:48","slug":"pang-dishes-up-second-cookbook-and-new-recipes-with-a-bang","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/friends\/pang-dishes-up-second-cookbook-and-new-recipes-with-a-bang\/","title":{"rendered":"Pang dishes up second cookbook, and new recipes with a bang"},"content":{"rendered":"\n\n\n<p class=\"has-sm-font-size\"><em>Cook, author, business owner and dumpling king \u2013 Brendan Pang is on one impressive culinary journey.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-sm-font-size\"><strong>Author | Carmelle Wilkinson<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Former Masterchef contestant and Perth \u201cDumpling King\u201d Brendan Pang (BA Social Work, 2016) always knew he wanted to work with people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After graduating from Âé¶¹Ö±²¥, he landed a dream job in Broome in the field of child protection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Throwing himself into the Broome lifestyle, Brendan enjoyed working with local kids and even taught boxing at the local youth club.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But it wasn\u2019t long before he switched the boxing gloves for oven mittens and was accepted into the 2018 season of <a href=\"https:\/\/10play.com.au\/masterchef\/participants\/season-10\/brendan-pang\/pa190315lkf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Masterchef Australia<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Finishing in the top 10, Brendan wowed the judges and viewers with his drool-worthy dumplings and dipping sauces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSocial work will always be a part of me. I\u2019ve always been passionate about working with people and I guess I\u2019m still doing that. Just in a different way,\u2019\u2019 he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-style-default\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"636\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/friends\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/03\/Image-20.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-9393\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Nowadays Brendan is setting tastebuds on fire with his dangerously delicious dumplings and lip-smacking noodles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With a second cookbook in the works and more pop-up cooking classes on the way, the 29-year-old is winning over Perth foodies one tasty morsel at a time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Born into a large Chinese-Mauritian family, the former social worker turned food personality was lucky to experience a smorgasbord of food influences including Indian, Creole, French and Chinese.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMauritian food culture is so rich and diverse. Just simple, tasty food that people can enjoy with their family and friends,\u2019\u2019 he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFor me, I find making dumplings therapeutic. They are versatile and delicious but also extend to other cultures and cuisines \u2013 such as Japanese gyozas and Italian ravioli and tortellini.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-style-default\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"616\" height=\"709\" src=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/friends\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/03\/Image-Seven.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-9405\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-sm-font-size\"><em>Bumplings Perth is a must visit at the Sunshine Harvester Works in Fremantle.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since his big break on Masterchef Australia, Brendan has been on one impressive culinary journey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cA friend of mine who worked at a bakery at the time called me and encouraged me to apply. I had thought about it in the past, but after he mentioned it, I couldn\u2019t stop thinking about it, and I decided to just go for it,\u2019\u2019 he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-style-default\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"736\" height=\"749\" src=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/friends\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/03\/Image-Nine.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-9406\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-sm-font-size\"><em>Nothing warms the soul more than a hot steaming bowl of Brendan\u2019s Red Curry Chicken Wonton Soup.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt coincided with Mum opening her own cake business and my uncle leaving his engineering career to open a caf\u00e9, so the timing just felt right.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI always wanted to work for myself and pursue something I really loved, and I am so grateful I did, because Masterchef was the experience I needed to kick-start my career in food.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His first cookbook \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/brendanpang.com.au\/shop\/this-is-a-book-about-dumplings-4th-release\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">This Book is about Dumplings<\/a>\u201d was so well received he decided to write another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-style-default\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"660\" height=\"811\" src=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/friends\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/03\/Image-Two.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-9417\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-sm-font-size\"><em>Brendan\u2019s first cookbook \u201cThis Book Âé¶¹Ö±²¥ Dumplings\u201d was well received by dumpling devotees.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe next book will mainly feature noodles and noodle inspired dishes,\u2019\u2019 Brendan said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t realise how much work goes into a cookbook, but it\u2019s been a year long commitment and I\u2019m looking forward to its release later this year.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m so grateful for Masterchef, it really was the turning point in my career and opened a lot of doors. A lot of people go on Masterchef and return to what they were doing before, but I wanted to keep the momentum going and ride on the success of the show to really make the most of the opportunity,\u2019\u2019 he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-style-default\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"500\" src=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/friends\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/03\/Image-Eleven-800x500.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-9416\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-sm-font-size\"><em>Brendan\u2019s success in the Masterchef kitchen was the platform he needed to kick-start his culinary journey.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So how did this cool, calm and collected cook survive the heat of the Masterchef kitchen?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHaha I\u2019m lucky I cope with stress well, I have a pretty thick skin,\u2019\u2019 he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf something stresses me out, I go back to basics and reflect on why I\u2019m doing it in the first place and that\u2019s usually enough to keep me going.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhile I like to push myself, I\u2019m always mindful of staying true to myself in the process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn life there are going to be people who judge you, but it\u2019s important not to take it too seriously. Don\u2019t take it to heart.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In an emotional Facebook post in 2019, Brendan took his own advice and publicly announced he was gay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-style-default\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1440\" height=\"1795\" src=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/friends\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/03\/Image-One.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-9410\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/friends\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/03\/Image-One.jpg 1440w, https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/friends\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/03\/Image-One-768x957.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/friends\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/03\/Image-One-1232x1536.jpg 1232w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1440px) 100vw, 1440px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-sm-font-size\"><em>Brendan remembers the joy of sitting around the table when he was younger, eagerly awaiting his Mum\u2019s delicious meals.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8216;My name is Brendan Pang and I&#8217;m 26 years old&#8230; but, for as long as I can remember and up until the age of 24 I struggled with my sense of identity,&#8217; he wrote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8216;As a gay male, I had feelings of being &#8220;different&#8221; very early on, and as I navigated the bumpy road into adulthood, I went through some pretty dark times from feeling pressured to change who I was, to experiencing high levels of social anxiety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8216;Thankfully, with the help of a strong and supportive network (my family and friends), I was able to not only survive the complexity of mental health, but thrive and become a stronger, happier, comfortable and proud ME.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Being his true self is certainly paying off \u2013 with the fan favourite attracting nearly 1000 dumpling devotees to his pop-up cooking school in Mt Hawthorn last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-style-default\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"623\" height=\"673\" src=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/friends\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/03\/Image-Eight.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-9411\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-sm-font-size\"><em>Bumplings cooking classes are fun, interactive and sure to get your taste buds going.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI was overwhelmed by the support for our pop-up Bumplings cooking school, and the exciting news is it\u2019s not over yet,\u2019\u2019 he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn May we are hoping to launch more pop-up classes in Bicton.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-style-default\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"692\" height=\"500\" src=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/friends\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/03\/Image-24-692x500.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-9413\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-sm-font-size\"><em>Fresh, quality WA produce form the basis of Brendan\u2019s dishes.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Brendan said the cooking classes and online delivery service were introduced during Covid as measures to diversify and extend his business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-style-default\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"820\" height=\"783\" src=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/friends\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/03\/Image-Four.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-9414\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/friends\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/03\/Image-Four.jpg 820w, https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/friends\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/03\/Image-Four-768x733.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 820px) 100vw, 820px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-sm-font-size\"><em>Brendan\u2019s rainbow dumplings a sight to behold.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve been lucky here in WA that Covid didn\u2019t affect us too much these past two years, we managed to weather it quite well. But lockdowns and restrictions did encourage me to get creative.\u2019\u2019 Brendan said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen we first launched our delivery service, I was actually driving around Fremantle and surrounds delivering the food to customers which was really cool.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-style-default\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"608\" height=\"677\" src=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/friends\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/03\/Image-26.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-9415\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-sm-font-size\"><em>Delivery anyone?
