{"id":3399,"date":"2022-08-30T14:04:39","date_gmt":"2022-08-18T03:53:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/healthandsafety\/home\/hazardous-materials\/asbestos\/"},"modified":"2026-03-24T09:39:53","modified_gmt":"2026-03-24T01:39:53","slug":"asbestos","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/healthandsafety\/hazardous-materials\/asbestos\/","title":{"rendered":"Asbestos"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"notification notification--important small\" data-segment=\"dom\">\n    <span class=\"ico ico-info\"><svg xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" viewBox=\"0 0 32 32\"><path d=\"M16 2a14 14 0 1 0 14 14A14 14 0 0 0 16 2zm0 26a12 12 0 1 1 12-12 12 12 0 0 1-12 12z\"\/><path d=\"M15 15h2v6h-2z\"\/><circle cx=\"16\" cy=\"12\" r=\"1\"\/><\/svg><\/span><p>Anyone who identifies or suspects they have identified an unmarked product containing asbestos should IMMEDIATELY report it to <b>Facilities Management on 9266 2020<\/b> or <b>Health and Safety on 9266 4900 <\/b><\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The University has an Asbestos Management program that involves the identification, assessment and control of asbestos related products on all University land.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Under the current Work Health and Safety legislation, workplaces must comply with the<em> Code of Practice &#8211; How to manage and control asbestos in the workplace<\/em> which specifies&nbsp;obligations&nbsp;in relation to asbestos containing materials.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In line with this requirement, the University has&nbsp;an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/healthandsafety\/documents\/\"><strong>Asbestos Management Plan<\/strong> (AMP<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/healthandsafety\/wp-content\/uploads\/AsbestosManagementPlan-2024Aug.pdf\">)<\/a>, Asbestos Management Register (AMR) and supporting documentation for the management of asbestos-containing materials on our campuses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Accidental Asbestos Disturbance or Unexpected Finds<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you suspect that an asbestos containing material (ACM) has been disturbed or found, then you should take the following steps immediately:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Cease any activity which may cause further disturbance to the ACM<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The work area should be evacuated as soon as possible without causing alarm<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Isolate the area to restrict access<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Inform Curtin Health &amp; Safety (H&amp;S) by telephone 9266 4900<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Report all incidents, no matter how small, on the University <a href=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/healthandsafety\/incident-reporting\/\">online incident reporting system<\/a> (RISE), including details of all staff that may be affected.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Curtin H&amp;S will check the asbestos materials register to find out if there is any ACM in the affected area and provide the asbestos register if the find or disturbance is on the register.
