  {"id":3431,"date":"2022-08-31T15:16:45","date_gmt":"2022-08-31T07:16:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/healthandsafety\/?page_id=3431"},"modified":"2023-09-13T10:53:31","modified_gmt":"2023-09-13T02:53:31","slug":"biosecurity","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/healthandsafety\/hazardous-materials\/biological\/biosecurity\/","title":{"rendered":"Imported biosecurity materials"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Biosecurity is a critical part of the government\u2019s efforts to prevent, respond to and recover from pests and diseases that threaten the economy and environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you want to import biological materials or environmental samples from overseas or interstate, they will be subject to biosecurity regulation.<\/p>\n\n\n<section\n                class=\"block accordions\" role=\"complementary\"\n        aria-label=\"Accordion\"\n        data-segment=\"all\">\n\n        \n\n    <div class=\"accordions__container\">\n                    <div class=\"accordion\">\n            <button type=\"button\" class=\"accordion__heading accordion__toggle\" aria-controls=\"how-do-i-import-biological-materials-or-environmental-samples-into-curtin\" aria-expanded=\"false\">How do I import biological materials or environmental samples into Curtin?<span class=\"ico ico-chevron-fat ico--deep-blue\"><svg xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" viewBox=\"0 0 32 32\"><path d=\"M10.91 30.41l-2.82-2.82L19.67 16 8.09 4.41l2.82-2.82L25.33 16 10.91 30.41z\"\/><\/svg><\/span><\/button>\n        <div class=\"accordion__content content\" id=\"how-do-i-import-biological-materials-or-environmental-samples-into-curtin\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n                    <p>There are two levels of biosecurity that apply to Western Australia:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.agric.wa.gov.au\/biosecurity-quarantine\/quarantine\">State biosecurity<\/a>\u00a0between WA and the Eastern States of Australia<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.agriculture.gov.au\/biosecurity\">Federal biosecurity<\/a>\u00a0between Australia and overseas<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>There are several Federal and State Acts of biosecurity legislation, and it\u2019s illegal to import any biological material without adhering to all the Guidelines and Regulations associated with those Acts.<\/p>\n<p>You might need import permits from both Federal and State biosecurity, or you might just need a Federal biosecurity import permit, or you might not need any permits at all.<\/p>\n<p>Follow the steps below to figure out which kinds of permit(s) you need to apply for, or\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/search.curtin.edu.au\/s\/search.html?query=Bernadette+Bradley&amp;collection=curtin-university&amp;clive=curtin-staff-profiles&amp;form=staff&amp;type=Search&amp;facetScope=\">contact your Biosafety Partner for assistance.<\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Australian biosecurity<\/h3>\n<p>Step 1: Search the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/bicon.agriculture.gov.au\/BiconWeb4.0\">Department of Agriculture BICON database<\/a>\u00a0for Federal import requirements.<\/p>\n<p>Step 2: Read the import conditions for your commodity to figure out if you need to apply for an Import Permit. If you don\u2019t require an Import Permit then just follow the import conditions.<\/p>\n<p>Step 3: If you do require an Import Permit then you must register (top right of the BICON webpage) to join the existing Curtin multiple user account. The Organisation Name is \u201cÂé¶¹Ö±²¥\u201d and the Account Administrator\u2019s Email is\u00a0<a href=\"mailto:%E2%80%9Cbernadette.bradley@curtin.edu.au\">\u201cbernadette.bradley@curtin.edu.au<\/a>\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Step 4: Once you\u2019ve been confirmed as a user, you can apply for an Import Permit. You\u2019ll need a credit card. Sometimes you may need to bring the materials into an Approved Arrangement facility \u2013 ask your lab manager and\/or\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/search.curtin.edu.au\/s\/search.html?query=Bernadette+Bradley&amp;collection=curtin-university&amp;clive=curtin-staff-profiles&amp;form=staff&amp;type=Search&amp;facetScope=\">contact your Biosafety Partner<\/a>\u00a0 for assistance to either get access to an AA facility or to get the approval for your own lab.<\/p>\n<h3>Western Australian biosecurity<\/h3>\n<p>Step 1: Search the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.agric.wa.gov.au\/organisms\">WA Organism List<\/a> to find the legal status of the organism you want to import. If it\u2019s listed, you\u2019ll be able to see any control requirements required. If it\u2019s unlisted or requires a permit then you\u2019ll need to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/healthandsafety\/wp-content\/uploads\/Application-for-import-permit.pdf\">apply for an Import Permit<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Note: if you already have an Australian Import Permit you may be able to use it to import into Western Australia following the steps below, by sending a copy with a notification as early as possible for the Director to check, and then again at least 24 hours before importing.<\/p>\n<p>Step 2. Check the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.agric.wa.gov.au\/iaquarantine\/\">Import Requirements<\/a>\u00a0associated with the organism. Fulfil all the listed requirements.<\/p>\n<p>Step 3. At least 24 hours before importing, use the most appropriate form to notify Quarantine WA of your intent, and include a copy of any relevant Australian or Western Australian Import Permit.<\/p>\n<p><a style=\"font-size: 2rem;\"
