{"id":3469,"date":"2022-08-31T15:58:18","date_gmt":"2022-08-31T07:58:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/healthandsafety\/home\/hazardous-materials\/chemical-safety\/risk-assessments\/"},"modified":"2024-04-15T10:40:31","modified_gmt":"2024-04-15T02:40:31","slug":"risk-assessments","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/healthandsafety\/hazardous-materials\/chemicals\/risk-assessments\/","title":{"rendered":"Risk Assessments"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Before using any product that has been classified as a Hazardous Substance and\/ or Dangerous Good (as detailed on the SDS), a risk assessment must be undertaken to determine the possible hazards of the product and the control measures required for its safe use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To complete the assessment you will:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Identify the hazardous substances to which workers are exposed;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Utilise your own knowledge of the chemical;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Review the&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/healthandsafety\/hazardous-materials\/chemicals\/sds\/\">Safety Data Sheet<\/a>&nbsp;and Label to further identify the risks;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Review the use of the product, including the concentration and duration;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Review the existing procedures for safe handling according to the hierarchy of controls, refer to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/healthandsafety\/wp-content\/uploads\/CHARM-RA-User-Guide.pdf\">Risk Assessment Guidelines<\/a>;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Review the use of personal protective equipment.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This assessment will enable you to determine the likelihood of injury or harm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All chemical and chemical task risk assessments must be completed online using the&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/healthandsafety\/risk-assessments\/general\/\">CHARM Risk Assessment Module<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/healthandsafety.curtin.edu.au\/risk-assessment\/index.html\">.<\/a>&nbsp;Completed assessments should be reviewed at least every 5 years, or earlier where circumstances change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For more information regarding responsibilities and authorisation of risk assessments, please refer to the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/healthandsafety.curtin.edu.au\/locked\/Chemical_Management_Plan.pdf\"><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/staffportal.curtin.edu.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Chemical_Management_Plan.pdf\">Chemical Management Plan<\/a>&nbsp;under the heading&nbsp;<strong>Risk Assessment of tasks involving chemicals<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The&nbsp;<a href=\"mailto:healthandsafety@curtin.edu.au\">Health and Safety<\/a>&nbsp;team should be contacted on ext.4900 for assistance in these instances.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Before using any product that has been classified as a Hazardous Substance and\/ or Dangerous [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":35,"featured_media":0,"parent":3395,"menu_order":8,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","template":"","meta":{"footnotes":""},"tags":[],"class_list":["post-3469","page","type-page","status-publish","hentry"],"acf":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/healthandsafety\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/pages\/3469","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/healthandsafety\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/pages"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/healthandsafety\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/page"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/healthandsafety\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/35"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/healthandsafety\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=3469"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/healthandsafety\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/pages\/3469\/revisions"}],"up":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/healthandsafety\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/pages\/3395"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/healthandsafety\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=3469"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/healthandsafety\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=3469"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
