Helping you develop industry-ready skills through authentic, hands-on learning \u2013 enhancing your employability in the process \u2013 is a key part of our commitment to you (according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/media-release\/curtin-graduates-rated-the-best-employees-in-australia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">latest QILT Employer Satisfaction Survey<\/a>, our graduates have been rated the best in Western Australia for employer satisfaction \u2013 demonstrating they possess the skills and qualifications highly valued by employers!).\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Part of how we prepare you for life after uni is through <strong>work-integrated learning (WIL)<\/strong>. WIL experiences blend theoretical concepts with practice-based learning \u2013 including activities, projects, placements and learning approaches that get you working in industry or the community during your course. WIL may come in the form of fieldwork; hands-on learning; internships and placements; specific initiatives; or showcases.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this article, we\u2019ll look at each of these areas one by one and see how WIL enables you to implement and consolidate your new knowledge and skills in a way that employers love. We\u2019ll also hear from Curtin students and graduates about how their WIL experiences gave them a career-ready edge.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Fieldwork&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Fieldwork refers to practical, hands-on learning experiences outside the traditional classroom setting and is a cornerstone of learning in many of our degrees. These experiences allow you to apply newly acquired theoretical knowledge in real-world environments including hospitals, community health services, natural ecosystems, legal clinics, and on industry sites.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/study\/study-areas\/health\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">health sciences<\/a>, fieldwork activities may encompass:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Clinical practice&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Practical work placements&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Participation in laboratories and simulations&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Site visits and field trips&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Study tours&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Work experience&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Camps and excursions.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Many of these activities are conducted in collaboration with industry and aligned closely with course requirements set by accrediting bodies, putting you on the best possible footing for taking the important first steps in your career. Throughout these experiences, you will learn from your lecturers, tutors, industry professionals, community role models, clients, patients, and their caregivers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p>\u201cI worked as an ambulance officer full-time during my second and third year at Curtin. These opportunities, which include one-year projects and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/advice\/what-is-a-capstone-unit\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/advice\/what-is-a-capstone-unit\/\">capstone experiences<\/a>, allow you to apply theoretical knowledge in real-world settings, enhancing your skills and preparing you for your future career.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our science programs, for example, offer extensive opportunities embedded within the degrees, providing you with practical experience across various disciplines \u2013 allowing you to contribute to your field of study while still an undergraduate. In your final year, you\u2019ll undertake a capstone project that integrates your learning and skills development, and provides opportunities to showcase your knowledge, often in collaboration with industry partners and faculty leaders.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/study\/offering\/course-ug-bachelor-of-advanced-science-honours--bh-advsci\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Advanced Science<\/a> degree, you\u2019ll engage in year-long project units, beginning in the second year of study. In these project units, you\u2019ll work in research centres, industry settings, or both. You\u2019ll use a logbook to track your hours, ensuring that 75% of your time is spent working under a qualified engineer, with the remaining 25% in general employment, technical roles, or lab work. By working with a multitude of different discipline students it ensured my future design ideas have been more well-rounded and experimental concepts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Zoe Thomas, Bachelor of Applied Science (Interior Architecture)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<\/div>\n                    <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n    <\/section>\n\n\n<p>All Curtin students can participate in the challenge \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=OCIhOpDRYsk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">see how our Humanities students tackled it in 2023 here<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Showcases&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Showcases are curated presentations or exhibitions where you can display your creative works and projects to diverse audiences, including peers, faculty members, industry professionals, potential employers, and the public.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These exhibitions and presentations serve as a platform to demonstrate the skills, creativity, and technical abilities you\u2019ve developed throughout your studies; they\u2019re a way to celebrate your achievements while establishing your network within your chosen industry.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the realms of creative arts and design, examples include the Art Degree Show, an exhibition for Fine Arts students attended by gallery directors, curators, arts professionals, collectors and the public; the Razor screen arts film screening; and the photography gallery show held at the Perth Centre of Photography.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At <a href=\"https:\/\/haymantheatre.curtin.edu.au\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Curtin\u2019s Hayman Theatre<\/a>, performing arts students hold productions open to the public as part of their assessments.
