  {"id":17201,"date":"2009-06-02T23:14:48","date_gmt":"2009-06-02T15:14:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/media-release\/curtins-lake-to-benefit-from-work-by-indigenous-community\/"},"modified":"2009-06-02T23:14:48","modified_gmt":"2009-06-02T15:14:48","slug":"curtins-lake-to-benefit-from-work-by-indigenous-community","status":"publish","type":"media-release","link":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/media-release\/curtins-lake-to-benefit-from-work-by-indigenous-community\/","title":{"rendered":"Curtin&#8217;s lake to benefit from work by Indigenous community"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"_mcePaste\" style=\"width: 1px;height: 1px\">A team of Indigenous people are working on rejuvenating the Jack Finney Lake on Âé¶¹Ö±²¥ of Technology&#8217;s Bentley Campus this week.<\/div>\n<div id=\"_mcePaste\" style=\"width: 1px;height: 1px\">Curtin Parks and Gardens Manager, Mrs Allyson Mullane, said a group of about 15 people are carrying out gardening, sustainable horticulture and restoration work.<\/div>\n<div id=\"_mcePaste\" style=\"width: 1px;height: 1px\">&#8220;We are pleased to work on this program which is an initiative of the IPA Employment Agency&#8217;s Indigenous Division,&#8221; Mrs Mullane said.<\/div>\n<div id=\"_mcePaste\" style=\"width: 1px;height: 1px\">&#8220;The program is a way of providing job skills to Indigenous and Torres Strait Islander people and aims to boost their confidence to get back into the workforce,&#8221; she said.<\/div>\n<div id=\"_mcePaste\" style=\"width: 1px;height: 1px\">Over three days, participants are pruning shrubs, mulching and working on sustainable gardening.<\/div>\n<div id=\"_mcePaste\" style=\"width: 1px;height: 1px\">The &#8220;hands-on&#8221; program includes an induction to the workplace, safety rules and regulations, training in equipment handling, horticulture training, and mentoring support.<\/div>\n<div id=\"_mcePaste\" style=\"width: 1px;height: 1px\">&#8220;This is a great opportunity for us to get the community more involved with our gardens,&#8221; Mrs Mullane said.<\/div>\n<div id=\"_mcePaste\" style=\"width: 1px;height: 1px\">&#8220;The Jack Finney Lake is a significant icon as it is a focal point as people enter the main entrance.
