  {"id":17207,"date":"2009-07-08T01:52:50","date_gmt":"2009-07-07T17:52:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/media-release\/the-aileen-plant-memorial-lecture\/"},"modified":"2009-07-08T01:52:50","modified_gmt":"2009-07-07T17:52:50","slug":"the-aileen-plant-memorial-lecture","status":"publish","type":"media-release","link":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/media-release\/the-aileen-plant-memorial-lecture\/","title":{"rendered":"The Aileen Plant Memorial Lecture"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Tensions in global public health \u2013 implications for governments in implementing the International Health Regulations (2005) in the context of national sovereignty<\/p>\n<p>Tuesday 21 July 2009<br \/>\n5.00pm &#8211; 7.00pm<br \/>\nBankWest Theatre, Building 200<br \/>\nÂé¶¹Ö±²¥ of Technology<br \/>\nKent Street, Bentley<\/p>\n<p>Tensions in global public health will come under the spotlight at the Aileen Plant Memorial Lecture on Tuesday 21 July 2009 from 5.00pm at Âé¶¹Ö±²¥ of Technology\u2019s Bentley Campus.<\/p>\n<p>The World Health Organisation\u2019s (WHO) former Executive Director of the Director-General&#8217;s Office Dr Bill Kean will present on Tensions in global public health \u2013 implications for governments in implementing the International Health Regulations (2005) in the context of national sovereignty.<\/p>\n<p>He will discuss the International Health Regulations (IHR) and outline some of the tensions faced by governments in implementing the IHR, such as the greater good versus what could be the best for each nation.<\/p>\n<p>The Aileen Plant Memorial Lecture honours the late Aileen Plant who was Professor of International Health and Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the Australian Biosecurity Cooperative Research Centre for Emerging Infectious Disease at Curtin.<\/p>\n<p>During the SARS epidemic, Professor Plant was invited by WHO to lead its investigation in Vietnam.
