{"id":17228,"date":"2008-11-11T05:35:17","date_gmt":"2008-11-10T21:35:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/media-release\/fulbright-scholar-seizes-opportunity-with-muresk\/"},"modified":"2008-11-11T05:35:17","modified_gmt":"2008-11-10T21:35:17","slug":"fulbright-scholar-seizes-opportunity-with-muresk","status":"publish","type":"media-release","link":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/media-release\/fulbright-scholar-seizes-opportunity-with-muresk\/","title":{"rendered":"Fulbright scholar seizes opportunity with Muresk"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"title\">\n<div id=\"titledesc\">\n<p>C294\/08<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span>11 November 2008<\/span><\/div>\n<p>Â鶹ֱ²¥ of Technology continues to attract top research students  with the latest arrival of Fulbright Postgraduate Scholar, Laura Merwin at the  Muresk Institute\u2019s Department of Environmental Biology.<\/p>\n<p>Laura, from California\u2019s Pepperdine University in the United States, selected  Curtin for the chance to work with plant ecologist, Professor Byron Lamont, of  Muresk.<\/p>\n<p>She has completed her Bachelor of Science degree and has applied to do her  PhD in the US.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis year will be a valuable experience for me and hopefully contribute to  my knowledge of the WA flora and the ecology research community in general,\u201d she  said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cProfessor Lamont has a lifetime of experience and his work analysing the  molecular structure of populations in the Australia flora contributes to  long-term conservation efforts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Laura will be in WA for 12 months and will study the genetics of banksias as  a clue to their long-distance dispersal potential in the face of climate  change.<\/p>\n<p>The Fulbright program is the largest educational scholarship of its kind,  created by US Senator J.
