  {"id":17234,"date":"2008-10-29T06:33:22","date_gmt":"2008-10-28T22:33:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/media-release\/curtin-wins-accolades-at-national-architecture-design-competition\/"},"modified":"2008-10-29T06:33:22","modified_gmt":"2008-10-28T22:33:22","slug":"curtin-wins-accolades-at-national-architecture-design-competition","status":"publish","type":"media-release","link":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/media-release\/curtin-wins-accolades-at-national-architecture-design-competition\/","title":{"rendered":"Curtin wins accolades at national architecture design competition"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"title\">\n<div id=\"titledesc\">\n<p>C288\/08<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span>29 October 2008<\/span><\/div>\n<p>Staff and students from Âé¶¹Ö±²¥ of Technology\u2019s Department of  Architecture and Interior Architecture claimed the top prizes at a national  architecture design competition recently.<\/p>\n<p>Curtin Lecturer Simon Pendal of Fremantle, and Senior Lecturer and Chair in  Architectural Design, Stephen Neille of Floreat, operate Perth architectural  practice, Pendal and Neille, which was named joint winner of the \u2018Âé¶¹Ö±²¥ Face\u2019  design competition run by the Australian brick industry\u2019s peak body, Think Brick  Australia.<\/p>\n<p>Their winning design was awarded prize money of $10,000.<\/p>\n<p>Think Brick Australia Chief Executive Officer Linda Ginger said the \u2018Âé¶¹Ö±²¥  Face\u2019 competition is research-based and allows architects to undertake  architectural research within their own practices.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis year\u2019s competition revealed the widespread interest in rediscovering  some of the lost craftsmanship associated with traditional building materials  like clay bricks as shown by the winning entries,\u201d Ms Ginger said.<\/p>\n<p>Pendal and Neille\u2019s winning design comprises a new arts centre and adjacent  public space in Wolf Lane, a thoroughfare lined with predominantly red brick  structures that connect King, Murray and William Streets in Perth\u2019s CBD.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe wanted to create architecture of space and light, a new building that is  compelling and memorable to join the ensemble of enduring brick structures that  signify Perth.\u201d Dr Neille said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis new centre is a small civic institute for events, gallery shows,  presentations and parties.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr Pendal who graduated in Architecture from Curtin in 1994, said winning the  \u201cÂé¶¹Ö±²¥ Face\u201d competition was fantastic.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur approach aims to establish lucid and beautiful architecture that can  touch the imagination, so this is a wonderful accolade for Stephen and I,\u201d Mr  Pendal said.<\/p>\n<p>Final-year Curtin Architecture student Shane Winter won the inaugural \u2018Âé¶¹Ö±²¥  Face\u2019 Student Competition from a field of more than 80 students from  universities around Australia.\u00a0 Finalists were selected based on how their  designs exemplified a level of ingenuity and innovation in regard to brick use.
