  {"id":17244,"date":"2008-10-20T08:16:26","date_gmt":"2008-10-20T00:16:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/media-release\/curtin-diversity-leads-to-winning-essay\/"},"modified":"2008-10-20T08:16:26","modified_gmt":"2008-10-20T00:16:26","slug":"curtin-diversity-leads-to-winning-essay","status":"publish","type":"media-release","link":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/media-release\/curtin-diversity-leads-to-winning-essay\/","title":{"rendered":"Curtin diversity leads to winning essay"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>C278\/08<\/p>\n<p>Siblings Cameron and Louise Burns not only study at Âé¶¹Ö±²¥ of  Technology&#8217;s Bentley Campus, they also both recently formed part of the winners  circle for the national Advancing Australia Fairly competition.<\/p>\n<p>Cameron won the essay section of the national competition which encourages  university and TAFE students around the nation to think about their contribution  towards shaping Australia&#8217;s future, whilst his sister Louise was one of only six  runners-up in Australia.<\/p>\n<p>Cameron explained that his entry was inspired by the cultural diversity at  Curtin.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;At Curtin, different cultures all get along together, and there is an  acceptance of different backgrounds and religions.  I was also inspired by  stories on current affairs programs such as Four Corners,&#8221; Cameron said.<\/p>\n<p>Cameron&#8217;s essay provides insight into Australia&#8217;s cultural triumphs and  tribulations, and makes unique suggestions for a harmonious future.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Events such as the 2006 Soccer World Cup show supporters coming together  from different countries to support their teams, and they do so harmoniously,&#8221;  Cameron said.<\/p>\n<p>Louise&#8217;s insight into today&#8217;s Australia and the way forward for a harmonious  tomorrow was also recognised by competition judges.  The essay promotes programs  such as student exchange and migration initiatives to combat skills shortages in  the Australia.<\/p>\n<p>Louise said during high school she was only exposed to those of a European  background, however this all changed upon arrival at Curtin.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;When I came to Curtin, I experienced different cultures getting on well  together, and it was so good to see this happen,&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Louise&#8217;s essay pinpoints the formal apology to Australia&#8217;s stolen generation  as a major step forward for the country.<\/p>\n<p>Cameron is studying for a Bachelor of Engineering (Civil and Construction)  and Louise is pursing a double degree in Social Science and Commerce.<\/p>\n<p>They attended a formal presentation in Sydney recently.
