  {"id":17251,"date":"2009-08-17T08:25:20","date_gmt":"2009-08-17T00:25:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/media-release\/infertility-a-fertile-ground-for-curtin-graduates-poetry\/"},"modified":"2009-08-17T08:25:20","modified_gmt":"2009-08-17T00:25:20","slug":"infertility-a-fertile-ground-for-curtin-graduates-poetry","status":"publish","type":"media-release","link":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/media-release\/infertility-a-fertile-ground-for-curtin-graduates-poetry\/","title":{"rendered":"Infertility a fertile ground for Curtin graduate&#8217;s poetry"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A poem about the desolation of female infertility by a Âé¶¹Ö±²¥ of Technology creative writing graduate will appear in a prestigious Australian poetry anthology.<\/p>\n<p>Kelly Pilgrim-Byrne\u2019s poem, \u201cThe Venus of Willendorf,\u201d will be published in The Best Australian Poetry 2009 anthology.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs a relative newcomer, I feel very privileged to be included in the anthology which is a \u2018Who&#8217;s who\u2019 of Australian poetry,\u201d said Ms Pilgrim-Byrne, of Southern River.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis poem is one of a few I\u2019ve written about infertility, which is something I\u2019ve personally experienced over several years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was inspired by the actual Venus of Willendorf, an ancient goddess of fertility.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMotivated by my own struggles with infertility, the poem uses the voluptuous female form of the Venus of Willendorf as a stark contrast to the desolation of infertility.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ms Pilgrim-Byrne said she had written poetry and short fiction from a very young age.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy great love is to write poetry that is evocative and erudite, while maintaining its accessibility for the average person,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt means a great deal to me to have my work selected for the anthology as it will be read by a wide audience which is important as a budding poet and writer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ms Pilgrim-Byrne graduated with a Bachelor of Arts (Creative Writing) with Distinction in 2004 and\u00a0 completed a Postgraduate Diploma (Communication and Cultural Studies) in Creative Writing with Distinction in 2006.<\/p>\n<p>At Curtin, she studied under award-winning writers and experienced lecturers such as Brian Dibble, Alan Wearne, Elizabeth Jolley, Tracy Ryan and Liz Bryski.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey not only gave me a solid foundation in theory and practice, but pushed me to grow and improve as a poet and writer,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Ms Pilgrim-Byrne\u2019s first collection of poetry, People from Bones (with co-author Bron Bateman), was published in 2002 by UK publisher, Ragged Raven Press.
