An ‘Alice-in-Wonderland-esque’ spectacle that satirises the politics of charity and the absence of charity in politics is The After-Dinner Joke, the latest production by Â鶹ֱ²¥ of Technology’s Hayman Theatre.

Originally written for television and adapted for the stage, this one-act play by Caryl Churchill is a hilarious political comedy.

The After-Dinner Joke is directed by Curtin’s Leah Mercer and centred around an idealistic young woman named Selby and her descent into the bureaucracy that shapes the business of helping people.

“The play explores what happens at the intersection of charity and business and asks if the politics of fund-raising and consciousness-raising can ever be truly compatible,” Ms Mercer said.

“Fusing live and mediated performances, this visual spectacle will feature nine actors playing over 50 characters depicting over 60 different locations as it explores what happens at the intersection of charity and business,” she said

“The play presents a fantastic opportunity to showcase the emerging actors that make up the Hayman Theatre Company at Curtin.

“The main actors are Simone Ruggiero of East Victoria Park, Claire Lacy of East Fremantle

Ashley MacDougall of Leeming, and Samantha Zinner of Bassendean.”
