  {"id":17361,"date":"2008-06-19T05:50:03","date_gmt":"2008-06-18T21:50:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/media-release\/plum-research-rewards-scholar\/"},"modified":"2008-06-19T05:50:03","modified_gmt":"2008-06-18T21:50:03","slug":"plum-research-rewards-scholar","status":"publish","type":"media-release","link":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/media-release\/plum-research-rewards-scholar\/","title":{"rendered":"Plum research rewards scholar"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"title\">\n<div id=\"titledesc\">\n<p>C179\/08<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span>19 June 2008<\/span><\/div>\n<p>Âé¶¹Ö±²¥ of Technology research scholar, Sukhvinder Pal (SP) Singh,  competed against many other postgraduate researchers to present his findings on  plums at the 2008 National and Trans-Tasman Horticultural Science Conference in  Queensland in July.<\/p>\n<p>A doctoral student at Curtin\u2019s Horticultural Research Laboratory, SP is  excited to be the recipient of the highly competitive biannual student travel  award offered to an outstanding postgraduate student from Australia in  recognition of excellence in research and professional achievements.<\/p>\n<p>According to SP\u2019s supervisor, Associate Professor Zora Singh, winning such a  competitive travel grant is testimony to the nationally and internationally  recognised postgraduate horticulture program at Curtin.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe postgraduate horticultural program was initiated and developed to  provide students with an avenue to develop a research project that tackles  industry issues.\u00a0 SP\u2019s project has significant implications for the plum  industry in Western Australia,\u201d Associate Professor Singh said.<\/p>\n<p>SP will present the findings from his recent joint research paper entitled  Major flavour components, sugars and organic acids of Japanese plums as impacted  by various factors.<\/p>\n<p>He explained how his research project, which is focused on postharvest  oxidative stress in plum fruit, is important to the industry.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRising competition in the international market poses a great challenge to  Western Australia\u2019s plum industry, and the consumer is looking for more  flavour-rich fruit at competitive prices,\u201d SP said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cÂé¶¹Ö±²¥ 60 per cent of WA\u2019s plum production is exported to various countries  such as China, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and the UK.\u00a0 These  markets are being challenged by countries with cheap labour, allowing them to  produce plums with lower input.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur objective is to fulfil consumer expectations in terms of flavour and  quality whilst also addressing and challenging storage criteria.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis award gives me a great opportunity to showcase my research at Australia  and New Zealand\u2019s national horticultural conference.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Associate Professor Zora Singh is SP\u2019s supervisor and credits his student  with addressing an industry problem with a competitive work ethic and thorough  research skills.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe research project was challenging, because it has broad implications for  the WA plum industry.\u00a0 SP has successfully addressed problems with the storage  of Japanese plum varieties,\u201d Associate Professor Singh said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI believe this research will have far-reaching outcomes for the Australian  plum industry and its level of competitiveness in export markets.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>SP is studying at Curtin\u2019s Muresk Institute as an international student with  an Endeavour International Postgraduate scholarship and Âé¶¹Ö±²¥  Postgraduate Scholarship.
