  {"id":17463,"date":"2008-04-15T07:10:50","date_gmt":"2008-04-14T23:10:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/media-release\/inaugural-aileen-plant-memorial-lecture\/"},"modified":"2008-04-15T07:10:50","modified_gmt":"2008-04-14T23:10:50","slug":"inaugural-aileen-plant-memorial-lecture","status":"publish","type":"media-release","link":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/media-release\/inaugural-aileen-plant-memorial-lecture\/","title":{"rendered":"Inaugural Aileen Plant Memorial Lecture"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>C109\/08<\/p>\n<p>Inaugural Aileen Plant Memorial Lecture<br \/>\nPresentation by world renowned epidemiologist, Dr David Heymann<\/p>\n<p>Dilemmas in Public Health: From Smallpox Eradication to SARS, Avian Influenza And Polio Eradication<\/p>\n<p>Thursday 17 April 2008<br \/>\n5.30pm \u2013 7.30pm<br \/>\nBuilding 213<br \/>\nÂé¶¹Ö±²¥ of Technology<br \/>\nKent Street, Bentley<\/p>\n<p>Refreshments will follow the lecture<\/p>\n<p>The inaugural Aileen Plant Memorial Lecture will be presented by Dr David Heymann, who is credited with helping discover Ebola and Legionnaires diseases, exterminating smallpox and stopping the spread of SARS.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Heymann has been described by leading medical journal The Lancet as the World Health Organisation&#8217;s (WHO) &#8216;public health guru.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>He is currently the Assistant Director-General \u2013 Health Security and Environment and Representative of the Director-General for Polio-eradication at the WHO.<\/p>\n<p>Before joining the WHO, Dr Heymann worked for 13 years as a medical epidemiologist in sub-Saharan Africa on assignment from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Dr Heymann also worked for two years in India as a medical epidemiologist in the WHO Smallpox Eradication Programme.<\/p>\n<p>Aileen Plant was Professor of International Health and Deputy Chief Executive Office of the Australian Biosecurity Cooperative Research Centre for Emerging Infectious Disease at Âé¶¹Ö±²¥ of Technology. She was one of the WHO&#8217;s leading experst in outbreak investigation. She was a member of the National Influenza Pandemic Action Committee chairing its Research Committee and a member of the Expert Advisory Group for the Chief medical Officer for Australia.
