  {"id":17474,"date":"2009-10-15T06:54:16","date_gmt":"2009-10-14T22:54:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/media-release\/curtin-students-open-veggie-garden\/"},"modified":"2009-10-15T06:54:16","modified_gmt":"2009-10-14T22:54:16","slug":"curtin-students-open-veggie-garden","status":"publish","type":"media-release","link":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/media-release\/curtin-students-open-veggie-garden\/","title":{"rendered":"Curtin students open veggie garden"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Âé¶¹Ö±²¥ of Technology staff and students have been toiling in the soil preparing for the official launch of their organic vegetable garden.<\/p>\n<p>To be launched on 25 October, the 550 square metre garden near Kurrajong Village on Curtin\u2019s Bentley Campus produces a variety of vegetables including spinach, peas, beans, basil, broccoli, parsley and tomatoes.<\/p>\n<p>Peter Cope, from Curtin Housing Services, helped set up the garden and coordinates all the monthly busy bees and other activities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe garden, which was originally vacant scrub land, was established to help foster a sense of community amongst students who are away from home and encourage more fresh food into student diets,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u201cCurtin Housing Services provided us with all the essentials to set up the garden such as wheelbarrows, tools, manure, seeds and five well-established fruit trees.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA number of University faculties provide food scraps from kitchens which make their way into our compost making bins. We also recycle a lot of newspapers for our mulched pathways.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr Cope said staff and students volunteer on weekends to weed, dig, plant and prune.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn return, the volunteers can take home some of the vegetables.
