  {"id":17595,"date":"2010-06-09T06:51:32","date_gmt":"2010-06-08T22:51:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/media-release\/cadetships-make-wasm-experience-possible\/"},"modified":"2010-06-09T06:51:32","modified_gmt":"2010-06-08T22:51:32","slug":"cadetships-make-wasm-experience-possible","status":"publish","type":"media-release","link":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/media-release\/cadetships-make-wasm-experience-possible\/","title":{"rendered":"Cadetships make WASM experience possible"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Âé¶¹Ö±²¥ of Technology\u2019s WA School of Mines (WASM) will be offering up to 20 cadetships for its mining and metallurgy courses in 2011.<\/p>\n<p>The cadetships, facilitated by the WA School of Mines Graduates\u2019 Association (WASMGA) and industry and community groups, will be available to first year students who select mining or metallurgy as their first preference when applying to study at Kalgoorlie.<\/p>\n<p>WASMGA President Tony James said the cadetships, worth $10,000 each, gave students a head start with their university study.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll WASM graduates have great memories of studying in Kalgoorlie and we are pleased to be offering the cadetships in 2011,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Sixteen cadetships were awarded to WASM students in 2010.<\/p>\n<p>First-year mining student Luke Andony, 18, said his 2010 cadetship had provided many opportunities, including moving to Kalgoorlie.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Accommodation in Kalgoorlie is expensive and so is living away from home,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWithout the cadetship, I\u2019m not sure\u00a0 I would have been able to afford to study here.<\/p>\n<p>Luke said he had always wanted to work with machines, particularly in the mining industry.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI grew up on a family farm in Harvey, with a lot of heavy machinery,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI knew from a young age that I wanted to work with machines and the mining industry has the biggest machines of all.
