  {"id":17720,"date":"2011-03-07T06:06:16","date_gmt":"2011-03-06T22:06:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/media-release\/indigenous-student-graduates-with-two-degrees-and-a-business\/"},"modified":"2024-10-25T08:41:33","modified_gmt":"2024-10-25T00:41:33","slug":"indigenous-student-graduates-with-two-degrees-and-a-business","status":"publish","type":"media-release","link":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/media-release\/indigenous-student-graduates-with-two-degrees-and-a-business\/","title":{"rendered":"Indigenous student graduates with two degrees and a business"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>C036\/11<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Curtin graduate Ronnie Bosuen never thought he would one day own his own business, have a family and graduate from university with two degrees.<\/p>\n<p>The 37-year-old graduated with a Bachelor of Applied Science (Indigenous Community Management and Development) in a ceremony recently held at Curtin\u2019s Centre for Aboriginal Studies (CAS).<\/p>\n<p>Ronnie comes from Napranum, a remote community of just under 1000 people on Queensland\u2019s Cape York Peninsula, and travelled to Perth with his wife and four children to attend the graduation ceremony.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo have my children seeing their daddy up there getting my degree was amazing because at the end of the day, I was doing this for them,\u201d Ronnie said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI would have never thought a person like me would be here, doing the things I\u2019m doing today, and at the same time graduating with the friends I have developed over the past three years at Curtin.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Indigenous Pathways Solutions (IPS), a business Ronnie started in 2009 specialises in providing services to the mining, construction and civil industries.<\/p>\n<p>It sources work ready, skilled Indigenous staff through IPS training programs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPrograms are tailored to assist Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to obtain long-term employment across the resource sector and mining industries,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>CAS Director, Associate Professor Simon Forrest said he was proud to see so many Indigenous students graduating.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe students have worked tirelessly and achieved some fantastic results in their chosen area of study,\u201d Associate Professor Forrest said.<\/p>\n<p>Ronnie urges others to get involved and study at CAS.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI would encourage others to contact staff at CAS, get information on the different courses they have and make a difference in your life, your community and your future \u00ac- just like I have,&#8221;
