  {"id":17774,"date":"2011-07-01T03:18:42","date_gmt":"2011-06-30T19:18:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/media-release\/re-inventing-the-doctor-what-will-medicine-look-like-in-20-years-time\/"},"modified":"2011-07-01T03:18:42","modified_gmt":"2011-06-30T19:18:42","slug":"re-inventing-the-doctor-what-will-medicine-look-like-in-20-years-time","status":"publish","type":"media-release","link":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/media-release\/re-inventing-the-doctor-what-will-medicine-look-like-in-20-years-time\/","title":{"rendered":"Re-Inventing the Doctor: What will medicine look like in 20 years\u2019 time?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/news.curtin.edu.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/womanDr-lo.jpg\"><\/a>The changing nature of the relationship between doctor and patient will be explored at a free public lecture hosted by Curtin on Thursday 7 July.<\/p>\n<p><em>Re-Inventing the Doctor: What will medicine look like in 20 years\u2019 time?<\/em> will use scenarios performed by professional actors to illustrate how the Australian public have traditionally viewed and interacted with their doctor in the past and present.<\/p>\n<p>The influence of new technologies on patient expectations and in shaping the future role of the doctor will be particularly highlighted through interactive activities and role plays.<\/p>\n<p>The event will be chaired by Professor Moyez Jiwa, Chair of Health Innovation \u2013 Chronic Disease, at the Curtin Health Innovation Research Institute (CHIRI).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTwenty years ago, people walked into a doctor\u2019s surgery with limited knowledge of their condition, seeking help from what was often the only authority on health they had access to,\u201d Professor Jiwa said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNowadays, people have access to so much information via the internet and public health authorities that they will often walk into the surgery very well informed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe first visit to a doctor is no longer the first step towards a diagnosis.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to Professor Jiwa, the way doctors treat patients continues to change rapidly, with improvements in technology empowering them to utilise new treatment methods quickly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can have online consultations now, which can connect people with treatment faster than ever,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDoctors can also use computer simulations to predict the likelihood of future conditions based on present lifestyle habits and genetic predispositions to certain conditions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The free lecture is on Thursday 7 July from 6pm to 7pm at the Bankwest Lecture Theatre at Âé¶¹Ö±²¥\u2019s Bentley Campus.
