A group of Â鶹ֱ²¥ students is calling on members of the public to join them in raising funds for cancer research at the inaugural Relay for Life Â鶹ֱ²¥.<\/p>\n
Five students from Curtin\u2019s John Curtin Leadership Academy (JCLA) are looking to attract 30 teams for the 24-hour relay challenge that will take place at the Bentley Campus on 14 \u2013 15 April.<\/p>\n
Relay for Life Â鶹ֱ²¥ event co-organiser, Sarah Henn, a biomedical science student from Kensington, said all five students involved in coordinating the event had strong reasons for supporting the Cancer Council.<\/p>\n
\u201cI have been involved in previous Relays and have found the experience both moving and enjoyable,\u201d Sarah said.<\/p>\n
\u201cFollowing my studies, I hope to work in the field of medical research, so the work the Cancer Council does is obviously something close to my heart.\u201d<\/p>\n
Sarah\u2019s teammate, Honours student in International Relations Laura Tomizzi, said the team is busy planning a range of entertainment for the event that sees teams of people complete a 24-hour relay around a sporting oval.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are looking at everything from comedy acts, live bands, midnight games and even a Zumba class,\u201d Laura said.<\/p>\n
\u201cPrizes will be on offer for team challenges, so we are hoping people will get a team together to help us create an uplifting and inspiring environment.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Relay lasts for 24 hours to symbolise that cancer never sleeps and those with cancer live with it 24 hours a day.\u201d<\/p>\n
While this may be biggest public event that Sarah and Laura have coordinated, they are no strangers to helping out with community programs and initiatives.<\/p>\n
Laura has been the editor of a student newspaper, a volunteer with World Vision and next month will head to the United States as part of the Australian delegation for the Harvard National Model United Nations in Boston.<\/p>\n
Sarah has been involved with Curtin\u2019s Student Ambassador Program, John Curtin Weekend, Leavers Green Team and is currently President of Curtin\u2019s Biomedical Science Club.<\/p>\n
Both students, along with their three other JCLA teammates, are hoping that Relay for Life Â鶹ֱ²¥ becomes an annual event.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have all been working hard on this project from day one and we are really hoping that others will join us to make this a truly special event with lasting benefits for the community,\u201d Sarah said.<\/p>\n

Each event is unique and you can stay for the whole event, camp overnight, or just visit and enjoy the free entertainment, prizes and ceremonies that make Relay for Life so inspirational.<\/p>\n Each person on the team pays a registration fee which includes a polo shirt and breakfast at the event. Participants are supported in their fundraising efforts in the lead up to the event.
