Â鶹ֱ²¥ is applauding the announcement of $7.5 million over three years for the establishment of a Minerals Research Institute in WA.<\/p>\n
Announced by Mines and Petroleum Minister Norman Moore on Wednesday May 16 as part of the State Government\u2019s 2012-13 Budget, the Institute will support research focussed on developing new exploration and processing technologies.<\/p>\n
According to Curtin\u2019s Deputy Vice-Chancellor Research and Development Professor Graeme Wright, funding is the fruition of a long-pursued idea that brings Government, researchers and industry together for the good of Western Australia.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis stands to benefit the State directly through its mineral endowment as well as indirectly by enhancing the education and knowledge economies,\u201d Professor Wright said.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt builds on the strong work of the Minerals and Energy Research Institute of Western Australia and provides a greatly enhanced focal point for minerals research in our State.<\/p>\n
\u201cMinister Moore\u2019s support in developing the business case for this endeavour and promoting it through Government, especially in light of a difficult budget, is greatly appreciated.<\/p>\n
\u201cOur congratulations and thanks go to him for his commitment to the minerals industry.\u201d<\/p>\n
According to Mr Mark Woffenden, Executive Director of Curtin\u2019s Resources & Chemistry Precinct, the Institute gives minerals a research foundation in line with the petroleum industry\u2019s Western Australian Energy Research Alliance, of which the University is a key member.<\/p>\n
\u201cOverall, the Government\u2019s initiative will provide the framework for strategic research and development and innovation targeted at addressing current and future knowledge needs of the WA minerals industry,\u201d Mr Woffenden said.<\/p>\n
