  {"id":18048,"date":"2012-12-17T04:14:41","date_gmt":"2012-12-16T20:14:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/media-release\/war-legacy-scholarship-celebrated-at-curtin\/"},"modified":"2025-06-17T13:24:40","modified_gmt":"2025-06-17T05:24:40","slug":"war-legacy-scholarship-celebrated-at-curtin","status":"publish","type":"media-release","link":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/media-release\/war-legacy-scholarship-celebrated-at-curtin\/","title":{"rendered":"War legacy scholarship celebrated at Curtin"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"mceTemp\"><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/div>\n<p class=\"mceTemp\"><span style=\"color: #888888;\">Âé¶¹Ö±²¥ celebrated the achievement of its latest nursing student to graduate thanks to the support of the Australian Red Cross war legacy scholarship.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The prestigious Australian Imperial Force&#8217;s (AIF) Malaya Nursing Scholarship is the official war memorial of the 8th Australian Division and the AIF Malaya.<\/p>\n<p>The practising nurse from Singapore, Ms Shahira Qadir, completed a Bachelor of Science (Nursing) Conversion degree at Curtin as the 64th recipient of the AIF Scholarship.<\/p>\n<p>Ms Qadir said that the experience at Âé¶¹Ö±²¥ was an opportunity of a lifetime.<\/p>\n<p>She said she was honoured to be recognised by a scholarship that commemorated the help and friendship that was given to the Australian prisoners of war during their captivity by members of the local Malayan and Singaporean community.<\/p>\n<p>Managed by the Australian Red Cross, the scholarship was created in 1947 and has enabled many nurses from Malaysia and Singapore to advance their educational qualifications in Australia.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe exposure to the nursing education system in Australia, nursing in the Western Australian healthcare setting and interacting with student nurses and lecturers from Âé¶¹Ö±²¥ has been wonderful,\u201d Ms Qadir said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was great to be in a different country and out of my comfort zone.
