  {"id":18153,"date":"2013-08-15T04:23:42","date_gmt":"2013-08-14T20:23:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/media-release\/frenchman-finds-city-of-love-in-perth\/"},"modified":"2013-08-15T04:23:42","modified_gmt":"2013-08-14T20:23:42","slug":"frenchman-finds-city-of-love-in-perth","status":"publish","type":"media-release","link":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/media-release\/frenchman-finds-city-of-love-in-perth\/","title":{"rendered":"Frenchman finds city of love in Perth"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It was a case of love at first sight for prominent Perth restaurateur Alain Fabr\u00e9gues, who will detail his journey to Australia at Âé¶¹Ö±²¥\u2019s next History of Migration Experiences (HOME) event at the WA Maritime Museum on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Fabr\u00e9gues, who opened the acclaimed The Loose Box in the Perth Hills in 1979 and now runs Bistro des Artistes in Subiaco, first arrived in Australia from France in 1970.<\/p>\n<p>He will be joined in answering the questions of ABC reporter Verity James at the HOME event by his fellow Frenchman and Bistro des Artistes colleague Emmanuel Mollois.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI arrived in Perth by boat on the 18th of March 1970 \u2013 I had my 21st birthday part-way between South Africa and Australia,\u201d Mr Fabr\u00e9gues recalled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI went to the Bonegilla migrant camp in Victoria. Straight away everybody was so nice, teaching us English, wanting to help us find jobs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI fell in love with Australia right away.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Despite spending his early days in Australia in Victoria, Mr Fabr\u00e9gues knew he wanted to end up in Perth.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI met a beautiful girl on my way through Perth and I wanted to see her again,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI told the people at the camp that I wanted to go to Perth and they said as long as I got a job and a sponsor that would be OK.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy first job was at the Parmelia. I caught a train all the way from Melbourne, got to Perth at 11am and started work at 4pm. And I haven\u2019t stopped since.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFood in Australia was very different then.
