{"id":18482,"date":"2015-10-21T05:10:07","date_gmt":"2015-10-20T21:10:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/media-release\/curtin-professor-announced-as-atse-fellow\/"},"modified":"2022-12-06T09:17:49","modified_gmt":"2022-12-06T01:17:49","slug":"curtin-professor-announced-as-atse-fellow","status":"publish","type":"media-release","link":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/media-release\/curtin-professor-announced-as-atse-fellow\/","title":{"rendered":"Curtin Professor announced as ATSE Fellow"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/john-mackenzie-for-web.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-32432\" src=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/john-mackenzie-for-web.jpg\" alt=\"john mackenzie for web\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Â鶹ֱ²¥\u2019s Professor John Mackenzie AO has been elected as a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering (ATSE).<\/p>\n<p>Professor Mackenzie, Curtin\u2019s Faculty of Health Sciences, is a Research Associate and Professor of Tropical Infectious Diseases. He has been a world-leader in virology research for the last 40 years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMost of my work is concerned with global surveillance and response to outbreaks of emerging diseases, usually zoonoses, with a strong commitment and involvement in programs within the World Health Organization,\u201d Professor Mackenzie said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have worked particularly closely with the Global Outbreak Alert and Response Network and the Asia Pacific Strategy for Emerging Diseases.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m also very involved in all aspects concerned with the concept of \u2018One Health\u2019 \u2013 a recognition that the health of humans, animals and ecosystems are interconnected.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In addition to these activities, Professor Mackenzie is strongly involved in State health activities concerned with emerging diseases and arboviral disease surveillance.<\/p>\n<p>His research falls in three sections:<\/p>\n<p>Influenza, with emphasis on virus genetics, live virus vaccines, and the ecology of avian influenza in wild birds in Western Australia.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Mosquito-borne viruses, including Ross River, Barmah Forest, Murray Valley encephalitis, West Nile and Japanese encephalitis viruses.
