  {"id":18518,"date":"2015-12-04T08:19:34","date_gmt":"2015-12-04T00:19:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/media-release\/no-13-marks-13th-graduation-showcase-of-fashion-at-curtin\/"},"modified":"2015-12-04T08:19:34","modified_gmt":"2015-12-04T00:19:34","slug":"no-13-marks-13th-graduation-showcase-of-fashion-at-curtin","status":"publish","type":"media-release","link":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/media-release\/no-13-marks-13th-graduation-showcase-of-fashion-at-curtin\/","title":{"rendered":"No. 13 marks 13th graduation showcase of fashion at Curtin"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Eighteen student fashion designers presented their capsule collections at the 2015 Curtin Fashion Graduate Show, entitled <em>No. 13<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The students not only created each garment worn in the show, but organised the entire event from ticket sales, venue set up, music, invitations and promotions.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Anne Farren, Head of Fashion Design at Curtin explained <em>No. 13<\/em> marked the thirteenth showcase for Âé¶¹Ö±²¥ fashion design students.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor the first time, both Honours and Masters Students presented their work in the show this year alongside the graduating class,\u201d Dr Farren explained.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOver the years we\u2019ve seen such a variety of design and development come through the Fashion course, and it\u2019s such a rewarding experience each year to see the hard work, knowledge and inspiration behind each piece presented on the runway.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Recent Telstra Perth Fashion Festival Future Runway winner in the Ready-to-Wear Men\u2019s category, graduating Master of Applied Design and Art student Seth Cray presented his collection, <em>Primary<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy masters degree collection has been an exploration of integrating high-technology such as machine embroidery, digital printing and computerised knitwear into the design process,\u201d Mr Cray explained.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPrimary was inspired by the idea of one\u2019s very first pencil case, and includes glue sticks, safety scissors, coloured pencils, and erasers, all translated and explored through high-tech fashion and textile machinery.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Seth has been selected as a participant in the WA-Hyogo Banshu Fashion Textile program for 2016 and will head to Japan to learn how high-end textiles, such as silks, are made first-hand.<\/p>\n<p>Honours student Sheona Cowden presented her collection, <em>Loves Labour Lost<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy collection examines the relevance of traditional handicrafts in contemporary practice and asks what place do traditional techniques, such as thread work and shoe craftsmanship, have in the world of modern garments,\u201d Ms Cowden explained.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe resurgence of interest in handmade or \u2018authentic\u2019 objects in today\u2019s society has inspired this collection. The use of techniques such as French knitting, embroidery, French knotting, tatting, traditional pattern making, Huarache shoes and weaving enhance meaning and value to my garments.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe handcrafts used in my garments tell a story, making each piece unique and giving a sense of longevity and value to my collection,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Sheona has just been offered an internship with <em>P\u00e9ro<\/em>, an international brand based in India, working with designer Aneeth Arora.<\/p>\n<p>Lucy Mitchell\u2019s presented collection, <em>Botanic Whims<\/em>, features machine embroidery and translation of imagery inspired by Monet\u2019s garden.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe garments are based around memories I have of my childhood in my uncle\u2019s garden.
