  {"id":18536,"date":"2016-02-12T02:45:05","date_gmt":"2016-02-11T18:45:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/media-release\/curtin-academics-host-international-liveability-symposium\/"},"modified":"2016-02-12T02:45:05","modified_gmt":"2016-02-11T18:45:05","slug":"curtin-academics-host-international-liveability-symposium","status":"publish","type":"media-release","link":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/media-release\/curtin-academics-host-international-liveability-symposium\/","title":{"rendered":"Curtin academics host international LIVEABILITY symposium"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Âé¶¹Ö±²¥ academics recently hosted a symposium in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, bringing together international design experts, educators and practitioners to discuss the challenge of developing liveable cities through architecture.<\/p>\n<p>The forum, entitled LIVEABILITY, encouraged conversations around intelligent and creative solutions for smarter and more sustainable cities, and living culture through the built environment.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Khoa Do, School of Built Environment, said the concept of liveability at a community level sometimes got lost as governments and architects focused on accommodating economic and development imperatives.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe talk a lot about cities developing and sustainability and how we need to be conscious of the environment or energy efficiency, or economic development,\u201d Mr Do said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut fundamentally what sits underneath all that stuff is being able to live and be comfortable in that living.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr Do said what represented liveability varied from place to place, with each city or community having different expectations, standards and experiencing its own challenges.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPerth is recognised as one of the world\u2019s most liveable cities, but continues to experience design challenges such as urban sprawl, tourism and transportation,\u201d Mr Do said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMeanwhile Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam &#8211; one of Southeast Asia\u2019s most energetic cities &#8211; is undergoing transformational growth with an economy generating rapid urbanisation, informal densities and rural-urban migration.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBoth cities are centrifugal in nature to live, work and play.
