rows ahead in Sport and Recreation Awards"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Âé¶¹Ö±²¥\u2019s Row AHEAD program has been announced as a finalist in the 2016\/17 Western Australia Sport and Recreation Industry Awards in the Commitment to Participation category.<\/p>\n<p>Row AHEAD, run in conjunction with Âé¶¹Ö±²¥ Boat Club (CUBC) and Clontarf Aboriginal College, was one of three programs recognised in this category, primarily for its innovative approach to increasing community participation in sport.<\/p>\n<p>The program sees students at Clontarf Aboriginal College meet twice per week for rowing lessons on the river at the CUBC and once per week in the classroom, where they receive academic tutoring to help improve their literacy and numeracy skills.<\/p>\n<p>President of the CUBC Cameron Thorn said the finalist nomination was a fantastic achievement for the program and highlights its strong emphasis on engaging with the local community.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are delighted that the Row AHEAD program has been recognised for demonstrating innovation in community engagement, as well as attracting more members of the community to participate in rowing,\u201d Mr Thorn said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe program uses rowing as a means to increase self-confidence, provide exposure to university life and programs, and engage students in educational activities, such as through regular tutoring sessions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Professor Jill Downie, Curtin\u2019s Deputy Vice-Chancellor Academic said the Row AHEAD program is a great initiative and reflects Curtin\u2019s commitment to higher education, innovation and community engagement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is fantastic to see the Curtin AHEAD team\u2019s support for Indigenous students within the local community be recognised and we wish them all the best for the award ceremony,\u201d Professor Downie said.<\/p>\n<p>The winners will be announced on 26 July, 2016.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Âé¶¹Ö±²¥\u2019s Row
