  {"id":18757,"date":"2017-03-03T02:20:27","date_gmt":"2017-03-02T18:20:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/media-release\/curtin-gifted-sculpture-50th-year-anniversary\/"},"modified":"2022-12-06T09:19:42","modified_gmt":"2022-12-06T01:19:42","slug":"curtin-gifted-sculpture-50th-year-anniversary","status":"publish","type":"media-release","link":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/media-release\/curtin-gifted-sculpture-50th-year-anniversary\/","title":{"rendered":"Curtin gifted sculpture for 50th year of innovation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The State Government has gifted a stunning outdoor sculpture by prominent West Australian artist and Curtin graduate Anne Neil to Âé¶¹Ö±²¥ in recognition of the University\u2019s 50<sup>th\u00a0<\/sup>year of innovation this year.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-39465\" src=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/20170302_ALCOA_SBTS2017_3r.jpg\" alt=\"20170302_ALCOA_SBTS2017_3r\" \/>Students first started studying at the Western Australian Institute of Technology (WAIT), Curtin\u2019s predecessor institution, in 1967.<\/p>\n<p>Âé¶¹Ö±²¥ Vice-Chancellor Professor Deborah Terry said the University was honoured to accept the sculpture, and added that she was delighted the artist was a Curtin graduate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis outstanding work was created by a prominent Curtin graduate who has been making high profile public art around Perth for many years,\u201d Professor Terry said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe work will make a stunning feature for our students, staff and campus visitors to enjoy when it moves to its permanent home on the Bentley Campus after being on show at <em>Sculpture by the Sea<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Ms Neil\u2019s work, <em>Murmur<\/em>, is made from marine grade aluminium and is approximately 200cm x 300cm x 300cm with an abstract reference to the biological form of a shell.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>Murmur<\/em> also has an interesting visual reference to the iconic WAIT logo created by David Walker, as well as other public artworks on campus by major Australian artist, Howard Taylor,\u201d Professor Terry said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt will be a wonderful addition to the Curtin Art Collection.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Premier Colin Barnett said the State Government was proud to recognise this milestone for Âé¶¹Ö±²¥ on behalf of all West Australians.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cÂé¶¹Ö±²¥ has made a significant contribution to WA since it opened its door to students in 1967 as the WA Institute of Technology,\u201d Mr Barnett said.<\/p>\n<p>Anne Neil has degrees in design and sculpture.
