  {"id":18868,"date":"2017-10-09T02:34:16","date_gmt":"2017-10-08T18:34:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/media-release\/curtin-researchers-muddy-current-thinking-earths-mantle\/"},"modified":"2024-09-24T11:25:50","modified_gmt":"2024-09-24T03:25:50","slug":"curtin-researchers-muddy-current-thinking-earths-mantle","status":"publish","type":"media-release","link":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/media-release\/curtin-researchers-muddy-current-thinking-earths-mantle\/","title":{"rendered":"Curtin researchers \u2018muddy\u2019 current thinking on Earth\u2019s mantle"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Âé¶¹Ö±²¥ researchers have for the first time discovered the melting of mud in the Earth\u2019s mantle, providing insights into the nature and history of the continental crust.<\/p>\n<p>The paper in <em>GEOLOGY <\/em>published by<em> Geological Society of America<\/em> has significant bearing on the understanding of how the Earth\u2019s rock cycle operates.<\/p>\n<p>After several research expeditions to Oman and the United Arab Emirates, researchers found that the geochemical signature in the mineral zircon conclusively shows that mud from the ocean floor subducts deep into the mantle, where it then melts to form granite.<\/p>\n<p>Lead Curtin researcher Dr Christopher Spencer from the Department of Applied Geology in the Curtin WA School of Mines said the findings provide new insights into how materials are recycled at the boundaries between continents and oceans, also known as subduction zones.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe results from our research provide new information into the nature and history of the continental crust and mineral resources found within it,\u201d Dr Spencer said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis discovery is crucial as it is the first time we have directly observed sedimentary material that melted in the mantle, as previous research has only speculated on this process.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur research discovered the highest oxygen isotope signature ever reported for zircon.
