  {"id":18880,"date":"2017-10-27T00:37:22","date_gmt":"2017-10-26T16:37:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/media-release\/unhealthy-links-australias-top-food-companies\/"},"modified":"2017-10-27T00:37:22","modified_gmt":"2017-10-26T16:37:22","slug":"unhealthy-links-australias-top-food-companies","status":"publish","type":"media-release","link":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/media-release\/unhealthy-links-australias-top-food-companies\/","title":{"rendered":"Unhealthy links to Australia\u2019s top food companies"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Australia\u2019s top 10 food companies either own or are connected to hundreds of different products, ranging from healthy to unhealthy options, a food map produced by the Public Health Advocacy Institute of Western Australia (PHAIWA) has found.<\/p>\n<p>The study of the nation\u2019s largest food companies showed nine out of 10 were owned by foreign companies, with Fonterra topping the revenue list followed by Coca Cola Amatil and Lion.<\/p>\n<p>Ms Ainslie Sartori, a nutrition expert and a Research Associate with the Âé¶¹Ö±²¥-based PHAIWA, said the study found many brands, which are promoted to children and young people, were linked to unhealthy foods and beverages.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnce we started to map out who owned each food and beverage brand, we were quite surprised to realise some of the links between companies that sell healthy and unhealthy products,\u201d Ms Sartori said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMany brands that are promoted at sporting events attended by children and young people are actually linked to companies that own alcohol or other unhealthy products.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAn example of this includes the popular children\u2019s icy pole, Zooper Dooper, a sponsor of the Big Bash League &#8211;
