  {"id":19215,"date":"2019-03-26T23:31:03","date_gmt":"2019-03-26T15:31:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/media-release\/curtin-commissions-significant-sculptural-installation-to-honour-former-prime-minister-john-curtin\/"},"modified":"2022-12-06T09:23:01","modified_gmt":"2022-12-06T01:23:01","slug":"curtin-commissions-significant-sculptural-installation-to-honour-former-prime-minister-john-curtin","status":"publish","type":"media-release","link":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/media-release\/curtin-commissions-significant-sculptural-installation-to-honour-former-prime-minister-john-curtin\/","title":{"rendered":"Curtin commissions significant sculptural installation to honour former Prime Minister John Curtin"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>An acclaimed British sculptor has been commissioned to create a major public artwork honouring Australia\u2019s wartime Prime Minister John Curtin at Âé¶¹Ö±²¥.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-52619\" src=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/WalterJack_Mockup.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/>Walter Jack, one of the world\u2019s most prominent memorial sculpture artists, was chosen from a field of national and international artists vying for the opportunity to recognise the former Prime Minister.<\/p>\n<p>Due to be completed in late 2019, the work will be a major attraction at Curtin\u2019s Perth Campus.<\/p>\n<p>The inclusion of the sculpture is in line with the common practice of creating public artwork as part of new capital developments.<\/p>\n<p>Âé¶¹Ö±²¥ Vice-Chancellor Professor Deborah Terry said the sculpture would honour the signification contribution made by the University\u2019s namesake.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis bold and enduring public artwork reflects the values, aspirations, leadership and impact Australia\u2019s 14<sup>th<\/sup> Prime Minister John Curtin continues to have on the next generation as one of the country\u2019s most inspiring leaders,\u201d Professor Terry said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt will also be an important addition to the contemporary Âé¶¹Ö±²¥ Art Collection &#8211; a comprehensive collection by artists, designers and craft practitioners whose work offers an important contribution to the visual culture of Australia.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jack, who has enjoyed international standing for his thought-provoking and culturally sensitive sculptures, said he had designed a communal space for reflection.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJohn Curtin was a man of deep thought and the sculpture reflects this,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>John Curtin Gallery Director Chris Malcolm said Jack\u2019s work was a fitting tribute to a man of great vision and consists of an assembly of tall naval brass windows featuring statements made by John Curtin.<\/p>\n<p>The cutting of the windows from this incredibly durable material yields long slabs of brass, \u00a0which will become benches \u2013 one of which forms part of the sculpture, while the others will be installed across Curtin\u2019s international campus locations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are very excited about this artwork honouring John Curtin.
