  {"id":19331,"date":"2019-08-08T01:59:16","date_gmt":"2019-08-07T17:59:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/media-release\/curtin-research-helps-solve-mystery-of-when-plate-tectonics-emerged\/"},"modified":"2022-12-06T13:59:24","modified_gmt":"2022-12-06T05:59:24","slug":"curtin-research-helps-solve-mystery-of-when-plate-tectonics-emerged","status":"publish","type":"media-release","link":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/media-release\/curtin-research-helps-solve-mystery-of-when-plate-tectonics-emerged\/","title":{"rendered":"Curtin research helps solve mystery of when plate tectonics emerged"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>New Âé¶¹Ö±²¥ research into how Earth\u2019s rocks formed billions of years ago has helped unlock the mystery of how the planet\u2019s unique plate tectonic behaviour changed over its more than four billion-year lifetime.<\/p>\n<p>The research, published in <em>Nature <\/em>today, found that by comparing the temperature<em>,<\/em> pressure and age of ancient rocks, it was revealed that plate tectonics evolved gradually over the past 2.5 billion years as our planet slowly cooled.<\/p>\n<p>Lead Australian researcher Dr Tim Johnson, from the School of Earth and Planetary Sciences at Âé¶¹Ö±²¥, said the new research helped settle the ongoing debate of when and how earth\u2019s plate tectonics system began.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMetamorphic rocks are those that transform as they are buried and heated when tectonic plates grind together.
