  {"id":19357,"date":"2019-09-12T00:28:34","date_gmt":"2019-09-11T16:28:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/media-release\/volunteers-lend-a-helping-hand-during-john-curtin-weekend\/"},"modified":"2019-09-12T00:28:34","modified_gmt":"2019-09-11T16:28:34","slug":"volunteers-lend-a-helping-hand-during-john-curtin-weekend","status":"publish","type":"media-release","link":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/media-release\/volunteers-lend-a-helping-hand-during-john-curtin-weekend\/","title":{"rendered":"Volunteers lend a helping hand during John Curtin Weekend"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A 500-strong team of Curtin volunteers is visiting regional towns and metropolitan cities across Western Australia, Singapore and Malaysia over the next month as part of the annual John Curtin Weekend.<\/p>\n<p>The volunteers, which predominantly includes Curtin students, will lend a helping hand to more than 40 community projects across the Mid-West, Wheatbelt, Goldfields-Esperance, Peel and South-West regions, as well as the Cities of Swan and Wanneroo, Town of Victoria Park, and the Shire of Mundaring.<\/p>\n<p>This year\u2019s John Curtin Weekend comes as Curtin Volunteers!, the University\u2019s student-driven volunteering hub, celebrates its 25<sup>th<\/sup> birthday.<\/p>\n<p>John Curtin Weekend Coordinator Mr Krishan Shah, from Curtin Volunteers!, said the team was delighted to be marking the special milestone with another successful John Curtin Weekend.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJohn Curtin Weekend is Curtin Volunteers!\u2019 largest community project, forging its place on the calendars of various community organisations who look forward to our dedicated volunteers providing their support every year,\u201d Mr Shah said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDuring this year\u2019s John Curtin Weekend, about 500 volunteers will roll up their sleeves and donate their time to more than 40 community projects spread across Western Australia, as well as Singapore and Malaysia.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Âé¶¹Ö±²¥ Deputy Vice-Chancellor Academic Professor Jill Downie\u00a0said John Curtin Weekend was one of Western Australia\u2019s largest annual community projects.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJohn Curtin Weekend is held to honour Australia\u2019s wartime Prime Minister, John Curtin, and demonstrate his qualities of vision, leadership and community service,\u201d Professor Downie said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur wonderful team of volunteers donate their time and efforts to help others every year, offering their support to a range of different causes and learning valuable life lessons along the way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>John Curtin Weekend, which has been running for 21 years, is being held from September 6 to October 14.<\/p>\n<p>For more information about John Curtin Weekend, visit <a href=\"https:\/\/students.curtin.edu.au\/experience\/volunteering\/john-curtin-weekend\/\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Further information about Curtin Volunteers!
