A promising young AFL player and an Australian netball star have taken out the top two awards in the annual Â鶹ֱ²¥ Sport Awards.<\/p>\n
Fremantle Dockers player Caleb Serong, who is studying a Bachelor of Commerce at Curtin, and West Coast Fever player Alice Teague-Neeld, who is studying a Bachelor of Science, were awarded the top honours of Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year.<\/p>\n
Â鶹ֱ²¥ Vice-Chancellor Professor John Cordery congratulated Ms Teague-Neeld and Mr Serong, along with the other award recipients.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Curtin Sport Awards are a fantastic way to recognise elite athletes who have been inspirational in their professional sporting careers and who have also chosen to pursue their studies at the University,\u201d Professor Cordery said.<\/p>\n
\u201cCaleb Serong\u2019s first year in the AFL has been outstanding. Debuting in round four of the 2020 AFL season with the Fremantle Football Club, Caleb was awarded the NAB Rising Star award after playing 14 games with the Fremantle Dockers.<\/p>\n
\u201cAlice Teague-Neeld flourished in the 2020 Suncorp Super Netball Season, after arriving in Western Australia at the end of 2018. She had a strong season with the West Coast Fever, which gained her selection in the Australian Development squad.\u201d<\/p>\n
Additional award winners include Jordan Trotter from the Â鶹ֱ²¥ Hockey Club, who was recognised in the Volunteer Service to Sport category, and the Â鶹ֱ²¥ Wesley Football Club which took out the Sports Club Excellence Award.<\/p>\n
Curtin Alumna Lauren Mitchell, one of Australia\u2019s most successful and decorated gymnasts, was honoured with the Vice-Chancellor\u2019s Elite Athlete Alumni Induction.<\/p>\n
This year\u2019s winners were recognised at a special virtual ceremony held on Tuesday, November 24 at Curtin St Georges Terrace.<\/p>\n
