{"id":19932,"date":"2022-08-09T02:44:30","date_gmt":"2022-08-08T18:44:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/media-release\/four-curtin-projects-support-wa-defence-research\/"},"modified":"2022-12-08T10:04:54","modified_gmt":"2022-12-08T02:04:54","slug":"four-curtin-projects-support-wa-defence-research","status":"publish","type":"media-release","link":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/media-release\/four-curtin-projects-support-wa-defence-research\/","title":{"rendered":"Four Curtin projects support WA defence research"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Four Curtin-led research projects will help pave the way for the next generation of defence technology as part of the annual Collaborative Research Grant program awarded by the State Government.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediastatements.wa.gov.au\/Pages\/McGowan\/2022\/08\/$1-19-million-invested-into-Western-Australian-defence-research.aspx\">Announced by Defence Industry Minister Paul Papalia<\/a>, the projects cover optimising maintenance for the Collins Submarine Fleet, diver communication systems, mathematical modelling of the spread of misinformation and an Australian portable quantum optical clock.<\/p>\n<p>Â鶹ֱ²¥ Deputy Vice-Chancellor Research Professor Chris Moran said the Curtin-led research projects would help to strengthen WA\u2019s defence industry capabilities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cÂ鶹ֱ²¥ researchers will work together with other key experts in the field to support the development of the next generation of defence technology right here in Western Australia,\u201d Professor Moran said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe State Government is supporting this vital collaboration to ensure WA remains at the forefront of supporting Australia\u2019s sovereign defence capabilities by commercialising emerging technologies that will play a key role.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy diversifying research and development in the defence technology sector, the Collaborative Research Grant program seeks to build industry and academic collaborations to enhance the impact of our research.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The four Curtin-led projects include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Advanced fabrication of cold atom traps for an Australian portable quantum optical clock:<\/strong> Dr William Rickard &#8211; Led by Â鶹ֱ²¥ in collaboration with The University of Western Australia, University of Adelaide and Australian National University;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Data-driven maintenance optimisation for the Collins Submarine Fleet: <\/strong>Professor Ryan Loxton &#8211; Led by Â鶹ֱ²¥ in collaboration with Australian Submarine Corporation;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Psychologically informed mathematical modelling of misinformation spread:<\/strong> Dr Mengbin Ye &#8211; Led by Â鶹ֱ²¥ in collaboration with The University of Western Australia;
