Themed \u2018<em>Ordinariness and Innovation,\u2019 <\/em>the conference will be held from 24 to 27 June across the University\u2019s Bentley campus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The event is the world\u2019s largest international conference for sociolinguists, with this year\u2019s symposium attracting more than 500 delegates from 53 countries to discuss ideas and exchange research findings on the relationship between language and society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Symposium Co-Chair <a href=\"https:\/\/staffportal.curtin.edu.au\/staff\/profile\/view\/lisa-lim-f2c03387\/\">Associate Professor Lisa Lim<\/a> and Dean, International, for the Faculty of Humanities at Âé¶¹Ö±²¥ says particular emphasis will be on supporting diversity, equity and inclusion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are thrilled to host the 25<sup>th<\/sup> Sociolinguistics Symposium, fostering dialogue on the critical issues of language and society,\u201d Associate Professor Lim said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe symposium brings together scholars from across the globe to explore topics from Indigenous languages and multiculturalism to the linguistic challenges faced by marginalised communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSociolinguistics explores how language varies based on social factors such as class, gender, ethnicity, age and region. In examining these dynamics, we can better appreciate the diversity of human communication.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Presentations and panel discussions will cover a wide range of topics including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u2018Calm down\u2019: Accentism in emergency calls and the misperception of callers\u2019 competence, confidence and emotional state.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u2018Experiences from Down Under\u2019: Systemic marginalisation of culturally and linguistically diverse communities in Australia.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Whose voices is it?\u2019: Untangling the heteroglossic nature of generative AI.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u2018Asian drivers, you so sirry!\u2019: Linguistic racism on social media.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u2018You mob!
