  {"id":25597,"date":"2024-07-31T14:21:48","date_gmt":"2024-07-31T06:21:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/?post_type=media-release&#038;p=25597"},"modified":"2024-08-01T09:21:25","modified_gmt":"2024-08-01T01:21:25","slug":"curtin-students-tackle-now-what-at-2024-indigenous-futures-challenge","status":"publish","type":"media-release","link":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/media-release\/curtin-students-tackle-now-what-at-2024-indigenous-futures-challenge\/","title":{"rendered":"Curtin students tackle \u2018Now What?\u2019 at 2024 Indigenous Futures Challenge"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The 2024 Indigenous Futures \u2018ReconciliAction\u2019 Challenge has tackled the question \u2018Now What?\u2019 in the wake of Australia\u2019s failed \u2018Voice to Parliament\u2019 referendum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The intensive week of learning and innovation saw five student teams collaborating with community leaders, academics and industry experts from organisations including the AFL and Landgate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Curtin\u2019s Dean of Indigenous Futures <a href=\"https:\/\/staffportal.curtin.edu.au\/staff\/profile\/view\/mandy-downing-d500e4ac\/\">Associate Professor Mandy Downing<\/a>, said the Challenge theme, \u201cThe Country said No, so Now What?\u2019 urged students to lean into discomfort, gain a deeper understanding of Indigenous culture and pursue transformative social change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s been an awful lot of silence since 60 per cent of Australians voted against constitutional recognition for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. Learning the majority of the Country do not want us to have a voice is difficult,\u201d Associate Professor Downing said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHowever, the referendum outcome will not deter us and the Indigenous Futures Challenge offers a unique platform to foster a spirit of \u2018ReconciliAction\u2019 and innovation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSenior Indigenous leadership staff, Elders and knowledge holders volunteered to share truth-telling, expertise and lived experiences through yarning circles, presentations, deep listening, critical reflection and mentor sessions, all aimed at shaping a more inclusive future.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Senior Policy Manager at the AFL Dr Sean Gorman, who addressed the students, said racism in sport mirrors broader societal issues and education is key to combatting it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhat we see on the football field often reflects what happens off it. Raising awareness is crucial and Indigenous players have become powerful advocates for their communities,\u201d Dr Gorman said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPrograms supporting and celebrating Indigenous people are vital to bridging the gap and creating a sense of belonging.
