  {"id":26040,"date":"2024-09-11T16:21:02","date_gmt":"2024-09-11T08:21:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/?post_type=media-release&#038;p=26040"},"modified":"2024-09-11T16:21:04","modified_gmt":"2024-09-11T08:21:04","slug":"new-national-survey-to-track-mental-health-among-young-australians","status":"publish","type":"media-release","link":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/media-release\/new-national-survey-to-track-mental-health-among-young-australians\/","title":{"rendered":"New national survey to track mental health among young Australians"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Âé¶¹Ö±²¥ has been awarded $8.1 million by the Australian Government Department of Health and Aged Care to conduct Australia\u2019s third National Child and Adolescent Survey of Mental Health and Wellbeing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The landmark <em>\u2018Young Minds: Our Future\u2019<\/em> survey, to be delivered in partnership with The University of Queensland and led by <a href=\"https:\/\/staffportal.curtin.edu.au\/staff\/profile\/view\/david-lawrence-e8084944\/\">Professor David Lawrence<\/a> from Âé¶¹Ö±²¥\u2019s School of Population Health, aims to update national rates of mental disorders among Australian children and adolescents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Building on the insights from previous surveys, the study will involve face-to-face interviews with 6,500 primary carers of Australian children aged between four and 17 years and invite young people aged 11 to 17 years to complete a questionnaire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Assistant Minister for Mental Health and Suicide Prevention, the Hon Emma McBride, said a better understanding of child and adolescent mental health and wellbeing will shape more tailored mental health services to meet their needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis research will also help health professionals and families to better understand the factors that contribute to mental ill-health in children and adolescents,\u201d Assistant Minister McBride said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe Australian Government is committed to improving the mental health and wellbeing of all Australians, and to do this we must begin by supporting our children and young people to thrive.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Professor Lawrence led the previous nationwide survey <em>\u2018<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/youngmindsmatter.telethonkids.org.au\/\"><em>Young Minds Matter<\/em><\/a><em>\u2019,<\/em> conducted through The Kids Research Institute Australia in 2013, and said this fresh study provides a vital opportunity to track changes in mental health trends over the past decade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe last survey revealed one in seven Australians aged four to 17 years had a mental disorder, with only 56 per cent having received help in the year prior to the survey,\u201d Professor Lawrence said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cA lot has changed in Australia since 2013. Shifts in educational expectations, the economy, future job security, the impact of the pandemic and the influence of social media have all heightened the pressures faced by children, adolescents and their families. Demand for mental health support has increased and many services are struggling to keep up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis third study, to be conducted by some of Australia\u2019s leading experts in mental health epidemiology, will further our understanding of what children and families need to ensure our young people can develop into flourishing adults.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cUnderstanding the mental health and wellbeing of our children and young people is crucial for planning and delivering the next generation of mental health services and supports.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Key objectives of the survey:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Update the prevalence rates of mental disorders among children and adolescents.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Identify potential early signs of developing mental health disorders.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Assess how mental health symptoms and disorders affect quality of life.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Establish rates of suicidality and self-harm.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Examine changes in help-seeking behaviours and service use since the last survey.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Investigate the impact of educational environments on student mental health.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The team members include:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Professor David Lawrence (Âé¶¹Ö±²¥)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Associate Professor Holly Erskine (The University of Queensland and Queensland Centre for Mental Health Research)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Dr Divna Haslam (The University of Queensland and Queensland Centre for Mental Health Research)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Emeritus Professor Michael Sawyer (University of Adelaide)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Professor James Scott&nbsp;
