trio awarded prestigious Honorary Doctorates"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Âé¶¹Ö±²¥ has acknowledged a trio of respected leaders for their exceptional service in their fields, by presenting them with prestigious <a href=\"https:\/\/secretariat.curtin.edu.au\/awards\/honorary-doctorates.cfm\">Honorary Doctorates<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Curtin Vice-Chancellor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/about\/leadership\/vice-chancellor\/\">Professor Harlene Hayne<\/a> said Honorary Doctorates were presented to people who have gone above and beyond in their field and made an exceptional contribution to society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis is undeniably true for Dr Andrew Crane, Dr Neale Fong and Ms Sharan Burrow,\u201d Professor Hayne said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s with great joy Âé¶¹Ö±²¥ acknowledges the immense impact of these three individuals by presenting them with Honorary Doctorates at our recent graduation ceremonies.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr Crane was named an Honorary Doctor of the University for his career in agribusiness and University leadership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He was a member of the Curtin Business School Advisory Council from 2009-2015, before joining the Curtin Council.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He then served the maximum tenure of three successive terms on the Council, culminating in his tenure as Chancellor from 2019 until 2024 which saw him guide Curtin through challenges including the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr Crane also oversaw amazing successes, including securing the Curtin-led Resources Technology and Critical Minerals Trailblazer, the opening of the Exchange precinct, and the major upgrade and refurbishment of the TL Robertson Library.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cDr Crane\u2019s leadership was instrumental in navigating the uncertainties of the global health<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>crisis, including the complexities of a rapidly changing environment, the closure and reopening of<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>borders and the disruption to traditional University operations,\u201d Professor Hayne said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHis steady hand ensured Curtin remained resilient and adaptable, while his guidance has been instrumental in steering the University towards sustained growth and impact with its 2030 Strategic Plan.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Curtin acknowledged Dr Fong\u2019s outstanding contribution to medicine and health service management over 40-plus years, awarding him the title of Honorary Doctor of Medicine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr Fong has held many significant public service roles, including currently serving as the Chair of the Western Australian Country Health Service Board, while he was also integral in establishing the Curtin Medical School.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr Fong is the current Chief Executive Officer and Executive Director at Bethesda Health Care and the Honorary President and Chairman of two community boards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Outside of his achievements and contributions to healthcare, Dr Fong is the Chairman and Commissioner of the WA Football Commission and served as the Chaplain to the West Coast Eagles Football Club for 22 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cDr Fong has had a profound impact on Âé¶¹Ö±²¥,\u201d Professor Hayne said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHe led the feasibility study and project management for the establishment of the Curtin Medical School which, thanks to his grit, determination and phenomenal networking capability, saw Curtin being granted Federal Government approval for a third Medical School in WA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHe has since been appointed Adjunct Professor of Healthcare Leadership and is a passionate advocate, believing the Curtin Medical School is ensuring the future prosperity of the medical workforce in WA and the regions.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Curtin awarded Sharan Burrow AC an Honorary Doctor of Letters for her dedication to education and fighting for workers\u2019 rights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ms Burrow has held senior positions in many influential organisations, including President of the Australian Education Union and she is also the current Chair of the Curtin Institute for Energy Transition Advisory Board.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2010, Ms Burrow was elected General Secretary of the International Trade Union Confederation, making her the first female leader of the largest international trade union organisation in the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ms Burrow has been instrumental in achieving major economic reforms both globally and in Australia, including the introduction of a national paid parental leave scheme, campaigns against modern slavery and the development of a global network of lawyers dedicated to defending workers\u2019 rights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe impact of Ms Burrow\u2019s advocacy and activism cannot be overstated, particularly in climate action which saw her appointed Chair of the Curtin Institute for Energy Transition\u2019s Advisory Board,\u201d Professor Hayne said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cShe has been a powerful voice for workers and communities around the world and an incredible force for change towards
