  {"id":29973,"date":"2025-12-18T12:17:39","date_gmt":"2025-12-18T04:17:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/?post_type=media-release&#038;p=29973"},"modified":"2025-12-19T10:56:22","modified_gmt":"2025-12-19T02:56:22","slug":"passports-ready-new-colombo-plan-scholars-to-learn-and-apply-skills-abroad","status":"publish","type":"media-release","link":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/media-release\/passports-ready-new-colombo-plan-scholars-to-learn-and-apply-skills-abroad\/","title":{"rendered":"Passports ready: New Colombo Plan Scholars to learn and apply skills abroad"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Six Âé¶¹Ö±²¥ students will jet to countries across the Indo-Pacific next year after being awarded prestigious 2026 New Colombo Plan Scholarships, which will allow them to undertake immersive study, language training and industry placements at some of the region\u2019s leading universities and organisations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An Australian Government initiative, the New Colombo Plan supports high-achieving undergraduates to live, study and work in the Indo-Pacific, strengthening Australia\u2019s social, educational and diplomatic ties in the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Âé¶¹Ö±²¥ Provost <a href=\"https:\/\/staffportal.curtin.edu.au\/staff\/profile\/view\/matthew-tonts-945ec2cc\/\">Professor Matthew Tonts<\/a> said the scholarships recognised the students\u2019 academic excellence and commitment to helping shape Australia\u2019s future engagement with its regional neighbours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThese remarkable students will act as ambassadors for Curtin and for Australia, building meaningful relationships that support our nation\u2019s long-term partnerships across the Indo-Pacific,\u201d Professor Tonts said.<br><br>\u201cTheir projects span critical fields including robotics, renewable energy, language, diplomacy and forensic science, with each to play a role in strengthening regional cooperation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Professor Tonts said the scholars\u2019 achievements reflected Curtin\u2019s commitment to producing globally connected graduates equipped to contribute to a rapidly changing region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThese scholars represent the very best of Curtin: curious, capable and globally minded,\u201d Professor Tonts said.<br><br>\u201cTheir experiences will not only shape their own careers but will help build lasting partnerships that strengthen Australia\u2019s role in the Indo-Pacific for years to come.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2026 New Colombo Plan Scholars<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Mathew Reed \u2013 Japan<\/strong><em><br><\/em>A mechatronics and computer science student, Mat will spend close to 18 months in Fukuoka, Kobe, Osaka and Tokyo, completing two study exchanges, a research mentorship in assistive robotics and internships with companies such as Kubota and Tokyo Robotics.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Grace Hailes \u2013 New Caledonia<br><\/strong>Broome-raised electrical engineering and science student, Grace will study applied mathematics, electronics and programming in New Caledonia while undertaking French language training. She plans to intern with renewable-energy organisations such as TotalEnergies or Akuo Energy and volunteer with communities on the Isle of Pines to learn from local sustainability practices.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Micah Blank \u2013 Japan<\/strong><br>Micah will spend five months at Kyushu University to expand his engineering expertise while developing deeper intercultural understanding, as part of his Mechanical Engineering (Honours) degree. His program aligns with Australia\u2019s priorities in infrastructure and energy transition, taking advantage of Japan\u2019s leadership in advanced engineering and low-emissions technologies. Micah aims to contribute to Australia\u2019s future engagement in Indo-Pacific engineering partnerships.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Jerry Zhang \u2013 Singapore<\/strong><br>Jerry will spend 10 months in Singapore undertaking advanced robotics and automation studies at Nanyang Technological University, combined with Mandarin language training. He will complete a major industry placement with Siemens\u2019 regional robotics and automation hub, gaining hands-on experience with next-generation autonomous systems to compliment his engineering and science studies.<br><br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Henry Strahan \u2013 French Polynesia<br><\/strong>Studying Advanced Science (Honours), Henry will undertake intensive French and Polynesian language training, study chemistry and cultural studies at the Universit\u00e9 de la Polyn\u00e9sie Fran\u00e7aise in Tahiti, plus complete a laboratory internship in biochemistry or toxicology.<br><br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Stojan Trajkovski \u2013 Singapore<\/strong><br>Stojan will spend more than seven months in Singapore undertaking a semester exchange at Nanyang Technological University studying engineering and science, followed by a full-time internship in the mechatronics and robotics sector.
