Have you heard of the Curtin Library Makerspace? It\u2019s a hidden gem for innovation, creative learning and play through making.<\/p>\n<p>Of all the cool places to explore at Curtin, the Makerspace is a must and here\u2019s why:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Take a guilt-free play break<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Whether you\u2019re in search of a creative outlet or simply something to do before your next class, the <a href=\"https:\/\/makerspace.library.curtin.edu.au\/\">Makerspace<\/a> is a great place to de-stress and refresh. If you\u2019ve got a few hours to spare, we can get you started with a 3D print job. Otherwise, the badge, magnet and keyring maker is a favourite as it takes less than five minutes of your time.<\/p>\n<p>Painting, embroidery, LEGOs, card making, filming \u2013 you name it! We\u2019ve got a vast collection of maker-y goodies to take your mind off that assignment you have due.  <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-66203 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/238852434_877109949899272_4490225606040861865_n.jpg\" alt=\"Badge maker on a table\" \/><\/p>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li><strong>Learn a new skill \u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>If you\u2019re interested in developing your digital skills and knowledge, we\u2019ve got a program called <a href=\"https:\/\/libguides.library.curtin.edu.au\/23things\">23 Things<\/a> which covers topics such as video editing and coding. There are online modules as well as workshops you can attend \u2013 all of which are completely free and self-paced. Did I mention it\u2019s also part of <a href=\"https:\/\/students.curtin.edu.au\/experience\/curtin-extra\/\">Curtin Extra<\/a>?<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re interested in hands-on arts and crafts or tinkering with electronics, there\u2019s plenty of materials and equipment at your disposal in the Makerspace. From beads and clay to Raspberry Pi and Arduinos to a robot watercolouring machine, who knows what you\u2019ll discover from simply being in the space.<\/p>\n<p>Even if you\u2019ve never touched a sewing machine or feel intimidated by the thought of laser cutting, we\u2019ve got a friendly crew of student assistants who will happily help you navigate the space and equipment.<\/p>\n<p>That brings me to number 3.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-66201 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/240545742_3016937981853985_9022221673081490476_n.jpg\" alt=\"Craft shelf in the makerspace\" \/><\/p>\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li><strong>Meet new students<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Made for students, you\u2019re bound to meet new faces while being in the Makerspace. The first person you\u2019ll most likely meet and be greeted with is a student assistant. Sometimes, they may blend in with other students using the space, but you can spot them with their staff badge.<\/p>\n<p>If COVID has interrupted your plans to attend club events, the Makerspace may be a good alternative to meeting new people from different disciplines and backgrounds.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-66200 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/234864517_385054943222371_1447807790803412384_n.jpg\" alt=\"Students using 3D printer\" \/><\/p>\n<ol start=\"4\">\n<li><strong>Be yourself <\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>You don\u2019t need to be an expert because we\u2019re all learners in the space. You can create and make as you feel in a safe, all-inclusive and judgement-free environment. We\u2019re here to support you!<\/p>\n<ol start=\"5\">\n<li><strong>Play with expensive gadgets<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Let\u2019s be real. Unless you\u2019re invested into 3D printing, who can really afford a 3D printer? A major perk of being in the Makerspace is that you get the opportunity to explore a wide range of otherwise costly equipment all for free!
