You may have come across it in a blog, social media post or article but been unsure of its meaning.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\"201341983\":0,\"335559739\":0,\"335559740\":240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>So, what is ableism, exactly?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Ableism is discriminating against people with disabilities based on the belief that typical abilities are superior and that disabled people are both inferior and need \u2018fixing\u2019. Like racism, homophobia and sexism,\u202fableism classifies groups of people as \u2018less than\u2019 or \u2018other\u2019 and includes harmful stereotypes, misconceptions, and generalisations.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\"201341983\":0,\"335559739\":0,\"335559740\":240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.verywellmind.com\/what-is-ableism-5200530\"><span data-ccp-charstyle=\"Hyperlink\">history of ableism<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> includes the inhumane treatment of disabled people in the Middle Ages and the Eugenics movement of the early 1900s and, while 21st-century<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0ableism is often less overt, it is no less pervasive.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\"201341983\":0,\"335559739\":0,\"335559740\":240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Curtin staff member, Sunyal Maroo, IT Risk &#038; Assurance Analyst, Office of the CIO, and Co-Chair of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/about\/values-vision-strategy\/diversity-equity\/disability-accessibility\/the-abilities-collective-curtin\/\">Abilities Collective @ Curtin<\/a>, talks about ableism in this\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=vrv1mBDh0DA\">insightful short video<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why and where does ableism occur?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Well, it\u2019s complicated. There are many reasons why people discriminate against someone with a disability and not all of them are obvious. Reasons can include:<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\"201341983\":0,\"335559739\":0,\"335559740\":240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Fear of disability<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Uncertainty about how to behave around\/interact with a person with disability<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Lack of disability awareness<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Learned social behaviour<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Moral or religious beliefs<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-ccp-props=\"{\"201341983\":0,\"335559739\":0,\"335559740\":240}\">Unintentional or benign ableism<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Ableism can be in-your-face or incredibly subtle. It shows up in the language we use, our personal relationships, in passing interactions with strangers, the in schools, workplaces and institutions we inhabit every day. Ableism can take many forms including:<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\"201341983\":0,\"335559739\":0,\"335559740\":240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Assuming a person with disability wants to be \u2018healed\u2019 or can \u2018overcome\u2019 a disability<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Suggesting a person with disability is \u2018inspirational\u2019 for handling everyday activities and routine tasks<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Speaking over or for a person with disability<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Assuming a person with disability is incompetent or incapable<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Assuming a person with disability leads an unhappy, limited life<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Using ableist language, especially after someone asks you to stop<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Inaccessible buildings, workplaces, schools and community infrastructure<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Not providing closed captioning services in a Teams meeting with a deaf colleague<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>What can I do about it?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The good news is that we can all do something about ableism, our own, other people\u2019s <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">and institutional ableism. Some ways to do this are:\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\"201341983\":0,\"335559739\":0,\"335559740\":240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"none\">Learning about disability \u2014 what it means and how it affects people<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"none\">Learning about ableism, ableist stereotypes, and the history of disability rights activism<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"none\">Listening to people with disabilities share their experiences<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"none\">Challenging ableism as it happens, for example, by correcting a myth or stopping bullying<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"none\">Giving people with disabilities a platform, or \u2018passing the mic\u2019 instead of speaking for them<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"none\">Advocating for accessibility and inclusivity<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"none\">Enacting policies or laws that counter ableism<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Unlike sexism or racism, the word ableism is often misunderstood.
