Whether you are just beginning your degree or nearing the finish line, it’s important to take the time to reflect on your values, aspirations and overall wellbeing, and how these elements can shape your future career.

In your first year Engaging in self-reflection through journaling and career exploration can help you uncover your authentic self. By exploring your interests, strengths and core values, you can create a roadmap that helps guide you towards a fulfilling career aligned with your beliefs and wellbeing.

During your studies Questions to ask yourself include: Are you truly excited about your studies, or are you influenced by external factors like job prospects or parental expectations? Are there research projects, internships, or volunteer opportunities that allow you to apply your knowledge to real-world problems? Which UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) resonate with you, and how can you align your academic and career path to help advance that goal?

In your final year Engage in a thorough self-assessment by reflecting on the experiences and lessons you’ve gained from your studies, work and extracurricular activities. Consider which aspects of your coursework, internships or activities have been the most rewarding. What type of work environment and organisational culture do you thrive in? Additionally, think about the financial and lifestyle factors that are most important to your overall wellbeing.

Completing the self-awareness module in the Explore Your Options Challenge will help you to confidently embrace new opportunities, take calculated risks, and commit to continuous learning. Adopting a growth mindset allows you to approach your job search intentionally, seeking roles that match your skills, align with your values, and support your wellbeing.

For many first-year students, the transition to university can be both exciting and overwhelming. As you navigate this new chapter, it’s easy to become consumed by academic demands, extracurricular activities, and social pressures. It’s essential to pause and reflect on what truly matters to you. What values and causes are important to you? What are your personal priorities and natural interests?

As you advance in your degree, you’ll encounter more specialised and challenging academic and career decisions. During this time, the importance of aligning your studies with your personal values becomes clearer. Reflect on how your current course selections, internships and extracurricular activities contribute to your personal and professional growth

As you near the end of your university journey, the focus often turns to landing a sought-after graduate position. While finding a job is important, it’s equally as important to ensure that your post-graduation plans align with your values and wellbeing.
