With classes happening on screens, it’s easy to lose focus, feel isolated or get behind. However, building the right study strategy to keep you on track can make all the difference.

Let’s dive into some tips and tricks to help you keep on top of your studies, stay motivated and make the most of your online student journey.

1. Have a dedicated study space

First things first: set up a study area. It doesn’t need to be fancy, but it should be consistent. If possible, avoid studying in bed or in front of the TV, as it can lead to distractions or make it hard to switch between ‘study mode’ and ‘relax mode.’ Try setting up a small desk in a quiet corner with minimal distractions.

To make it fun, set up a Pinterest board with study space inspo. Think about how you can create a good vibe by adding a lamp or some houseplants to the mix.

2. Create a realistic schedule (and stick to it)

Without the structure of in-person classes, time management is crucial for staying on top of the course content. Set up a weekly study schedule that includes class times, study hours and breaks and use a calendar or planner app to keep track.

Be realistic about how much time you need for each subject. For instance, if you have a hard time with a stats or communications unit, block out extra time to review it. And don’t forget to schedule short breaks — even a 5-minute break every 30 minutes can help you reset and stay focused.

3. Practice the Pomodoro Technique

One of the best strategies for staying productive is the Pomodoro Technique. Here’s how it works:

Set a timer for 25 minutes and focus on one task (no social media, no texting)

After 25 minutes, take a 5-minute break

Repeat this cycle four times, and then take a longer break (15-30 minutes)

Breaking up study time like this can prevent burnout and keep you more engaged with your study material. Why not give it a try?

4. Engage with your online classes

We know it’s easy to become a passive participant during your online classes. But actively engaging can really help you understand and remember information better. Here are a few ways to stay engaged:

Participate in discussions and ask questions on Blackboard — not only will you understand more, but tutors often remember engaged students when it’s time for grades.

Take notes by hand instead of just typing — research shows that writing by hand improves retention (so don’t completely ditch the notebooks and pens just yet).

5. Use digital tools to stay organised

There are heaps of free or low-cost tools out there that you can take advantage off to make your online study experience easier. For instance:

Google Calendar or Notion can help you with organising your diary

Quizlet is great for creating digital flashcards

Asana can help you manage group projects and assignments.

These tools can be lifesavers when it comes to juggling deadlines, projects and personal commitments if your normally struggle with organisation, so why not explore how they work?

6. Don’t forget to prioritise your wellbeing

Studying online can feel isolating, so make sure you’re taking care of your mental health. Stay connected with friends and family, take regular exercise breaks and practice mindfulness to reduce stress. Remember, burnout is real. It’s okay to take a day off and reset.

Online studying may have its ups and downs, but with these strategies, you can start to build an effective strategy that works for you. With a bit of structure and our tips and tricks, you’ll be well on your way to succeeding in your online studies.
