This feeling is called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.apa.org\/monitor\/2021\/06\/cover-impostor-phenomenon\">imposter syndrome<\/a>, and it\u2019s surprisingly common, especially among high-achieving students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What is imposter syndrome?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Imposter syndrome is the persistent belief that you\u2019re not as competent as others think you are. Even when you succeed, you might attribute it to luck rather than your skills or effort. It can make you feel like you don\u2019t deserve your accomplishments, which can lead lead to anxiety and self-doubt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a university setting, where competition can be intense, imposter syndrome can appear easily. You might feel it after struggling with a tough assignment, getting constructive feedback, seeing posts on Instagram or comparing yourself to someone who *seems* to be doing well in their academic and personal lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Recognising imposter syndrome within yourself<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the first steps to overcoming imposter syndrome is recognising it for what it is: a pattern of negative thoughts, not the truth. Some common feelings can include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Feeling like your successes are due to luck or external factors<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Believing you\u2019re not as capable as your peers<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Avoiding challenges for fear of failure<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Over-preparing for tasks to compensate for a perceived sense of inadequacy<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Five tips for combatting imposter syndrome at uni<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"1\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Acknowledge your achievements<\/strong><br>Write down your accomplishments, big and small. Did you ace your exam? Finish a group project on time? Get through a stressful week? These wins are proof of your abilities. Reflecting on them can help shift your perspective.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Talk about it<\/strong><br>Share your feelings with someone you trust\u2014a friend, mentor or even a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/students\/personal-support\/counselling-wellbeing\/wellbeing\/\">Student Wellbeing Advisor<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/students\/personal-support\/counselling-wellbeing\/counselling\/\">Curtin Counsellor<\/a>. You\u2019ll likely find they\u2019ve experienced similar doubts. Knowing you\u2019re not alone can be comforting and validating.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Challenge your negative thoughts<\/strong><br>When you catch yourself thinking, \u201cI don\u2019t deserve to be here,\u201d ask yourself: What evidence supports this? Often, you\u2019ll find there isn\u2019t any. Replace these thoughts with more balanced ones, like, \u201cI worked hard to earn my place here, and I\u2019m learning every day.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Focus on growth<\/strong><br>Instead of aiming for perfection, embrace the idea that uni is a place for growth and learning.
