It shapes how we understand sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, and the expectations, roles, and power linked to them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gender-based violence is any form of harm that happens because of these expectations and inequalities. It is linked to harmful attitudes, beliefs, and stereotypes about gender.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although anyone can experience violence, gender-based violence disproportionately affects women and girls, especially:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>First Nations women<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Women from refugee and migrant backgrounds<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The LGBTQIA+ community<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Women with disabilities<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-intro-font-size\"><strong>Clearing up common myths about gender-based violence<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gender-based violence often goes unrecognised. This is because there is a traditional idea of what violence should look like. But in reality:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It is not always physical<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It can happen online<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It does not only occur between romantic or sexual partners. It can occur between friends, classmates, colleagues, family, or strangers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-intro-font-size\"><strong>Common types of gender-based violence<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gender-based violence can take many forms. Some are more obvious, while others are more subtle and often normalised.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Emotional and psychological harm:<\/strong> For example, someone putting you down, mocking you, or humiliating you a lot.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Social abuse:<\/strong> Isolating you from your support networks, controlling your relationships and preventing you from seeing friends.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Sexual violence and coercion:<\/strong> Any sexual act that you have not given consent to, including being pressured to say \u201cyes\u201d, especially after saying \u201cno\u201d.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Physical violence:<\/strong> Harm to the body (or the threat of harm).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Technology-based violence:<\/strong> Sending you unwanted explicit content without your permission.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Financial\/economic abuse:<\/strong> Using money to control, intimidate, or manipulate you.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Stalking:<\/strong> Unwanted watching\/monitoring of your movements with surveillance devices.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Cultural\/Spiritual Violence:<\/strong> Preventing someone from practising their culture, beliefs, or traditions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-intro-font-size\"><strong>Reporting gender-based violence<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re unsure whether something counts as gender-based violence, that\u2019s enough reason to reach out and seek support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You don\u2019t have to label your experience, or have physical proof, or know what to do next.
