  {"id":4659,"date":"2010-01-03T04:50:48","date_gmt":"2010-01-02T20:50:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/global-financial-crisis-hasnt-dampened-curtins-generosity\/"},"modified":"2022-12-07T13:06:27","modified_gmt":"2022-12-07T05:06:27","slug":"global-financial-crisis-hasnt-dampened-curtins-generosity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/global-financial-crisis-hasnt-dampened-curtins-generosity\/","title":{"rendered":"Global financial crisis hasn&#8217;t dampened Curtin&#8217;s generosity"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The recent global financial crisis hasn\u2019t dampened the generosity of the University community, says Curtin\u2019s <a title=\"Link to Campus and Comunity Life home page\" href=\"http:\/\/community.curtin.edu.au\/\">Campus and Community Life<\/a> coordinator Maureen Meredith.<\/p>\n<p>A generosity to the tune of $52,433.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Our fundraising during 2009, in a recession year, was up $20,000 on the previous year \u2013 it\u2019s been our best year yet,\u2019 Maureen said.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018The <a title=\"Link to 2009 World's Greatest Shave story\" href=\"https:\/\/news.curtin.edu.au\/curtin-news\/curtin-staff-and-students-raise-25000-for-this-years-worlds-greatest-shave\">World\u2019s Greatest Shave<\/a> alone was up $10,000.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Maureen helps coordinate a range of fundraising activities during the year- including several annual events like the World&#8217;s Greatest Shave for the Leukemia Foundation &#8211; both on and off campus.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;We\u2019ve supported the Cancer Council\u2019s <a title=\"Link to 2009 Daffodil Day story\" href=\"https:\/\/news.curtin.edu.au\/curtin-news\/headlines\/curtins-daffodil-day-raises-record-amount\">Daffodil Day<\/a> for many, many years \u2026 and this year Movember was a new one,&#8217; Maureen said.<\/p>\n<p>Maureen said she greatly appreciates the assistance of the two US interns recruited by Campus and Community Life each semester.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018The first day I have them working is Guild O-day and they\u2019ll say, \u201cYeah, Mo gave us this job and we had to go around the University and we had to try to get people to shave their head \u2013 and that was our first day,\u201d \u2019 Maureen said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;It\u2019s pretty confronting for them, but we get the benefit of their enthusiasm and I give them every opportunity to contribute new ideas.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>\u2018They organised the <a title=\"Link to 2009 Curtin raises money to help Princess Margaret Hospital help the kids story\" href=\"https:\/\/news.curtin.edu.au\/curtin-news\/headlines\/curtin-raises-money-to-help-princess-margaret-hospital-help-the-kids\">Zoolander Walk Off for the Princess Margaret Hospital fundraising day<\/a>, and they really motivated some of our local students to participate.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>Maureen said in addition to the one-off fundraising events, Curtin staff supported The Make a Wish Foundation and Wheelchairs for Kids through regular salary deductions.<\/p>\n<p>Maureen also coordinates the Parkerville Children\u2019s Home Christmas gift program, which has been running for eight years.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018I get in touch with Parkerville in October and they give me a list of 50-60 names and a list of what the children would hope to get,\u2019 Maureen said.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018The interesting thing is that for the last two years Curtin&#8217;s Financial Services have taken on the whole 60 children.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Maureen says she tries to work closely with the Curtin Student Guild who were always willing to support on-campus events.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Everybody\u2019s worked so well together.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>Maureen said she was proud the University supported a position such as hers and was so committed to supporting community-orientated projects.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018We can provide an environment in which students are encouraged to think about doing things for people other than themselves,\u2019 Maureen said.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018I love my job \u2013 it\u2019s the best job in the world &#8211;
