  {"id":4679,"date":"2008-06-01T07:40:41","date_gmt":"2008-05-31T23:40:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/curtin-profile-professor-peter-newman\/"},"modified":"2022-12-07T13:06:30","modified_gmt":"2022-12-07T05:06:30","slug":"curtin-profile-professor-peter-newman","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/curtin-profile-professor-peter-newman\/","title":{"rendered":"Curtin Profile &#8211; Professor Peter Newman"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The founder of the <a title=\"Âé¶¹Ö±²¥ Sustainability Policy (CUSP)\" href=\"http:\/\/sustainability.curtin.edu.au\/\">Âé¶¹Ö±²¥  Sustainability Policy (CUSP)<\/a> Institute, Peter Newman believes  universities are in a position to lead in developing innovative  solutions to the major sustainability issues facing the community and  businesses today.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018We have to do things differently so local economies become much  more important,\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u2018The process of change is about someone getting out there to help  start things off and then sitting back and smiling once it comes  together,\u2019 Professor Newman said.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018I\u2019m just glad I got a chance to  be a bit of a stirrer.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Make no mistake though; Professor Newman  is more than a \u2018stirrer\u2019. The renowned Australian academic and 2006\/7  Fulbright Senior Scholar has advised multiple governments, helped save  the Fremantle rail line, written numerous books and lectured across the  globe.<\/p>\n<p>For Professor Newman, who\u2019s been fighting for change since  1974, the increased discussion about sustainable development in recent  years is a victory, but there\u2019s still a lot of work to be done.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Attitudes  and popular understanding have improved enormously but we still have to  fight the system,\u2019 he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Things don\u2019t change quickly &#8230; the  system grinds on even when cultural attitudes have changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018We  want change and yet we can\u2019t seem to achieve it through current  planning.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Gone are the days of global economics, argues Professor  Newman. \u2018We have to do things differently so local economies become  much more important,\u2019 he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Two things driving sustainability  are oil prices and climate change \u2013 we\u2019ve realised there are limits to  the kind of development we once thought possible.
