{"id":4757,"date":"2011-06-06T15:50:37","date_gmt":"2011-06-06T07:50:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/novelist-takes-out-horror-award\/"},"modified":"2022-12-07T13:06:42","modified_gmt":"2022-12-07T05:06:42","slug":"novelist-takes-out-horror-award","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/novelist-takes-out-horror-award\/","title":{"rendered":"Novelist takes out horror award"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Curtin graduate and lecturer <a href=\"http:\/\/www.justinrandall.daportfolio.com\/\"><strong>Justin Randall<\/strong><\/a> has won a national literature award for his graphic novel\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.gestaltcomics.com\/catalogue2011\/cw\/\"><strong><em>Changing Ways Book 1<\/em><\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/13\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/Justin-Randall.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-8006\" title=\"Justin Randall\" src=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/13\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/Justin-Randall-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>Randall\u2019s book tells of retired corrections officer David Barrot who moves to a farm after the tragic death of his son.<\/p>\n<p>The Barrot family tries starting a new life, but the dark that has dogged David just won\u2019t leave him alone.<\/p>\n<p>Newspapers start reporting unusual lesions appearing on livestock, and stories of strange side effects begin to spread quickly \u2026<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>Changing Ways<\/em> is like Noah\u2019s Ark meets <em>War of the Worlds<\/em> on the film set of <em>Supernatural,&#8221; <\/em>Randall told <em>Curtin News.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><\/em>&#8220;It\u2019s intense, emotional and dark but at the end of the day it\u2019s about the importance of family and the bonds we make.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The book is the first in Randall\u2019s <em>Changing Ways<\/em> series.<\/p>\n<p>The Aurealis Awards recognise the best Australian horror, fantasy and science fiction writing.<\/p>\n<p>Western Australian animator Shaun Tan \u2013 who recently won an Oscar for his movie <em>The Lost Thing<\/em> \u2013 is a multiple Aurealis winner.<\/p>\n<p>Randall lectures in <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/humanities.curtin.edu.au\/schools\/DA\/\">Curtin\u2019s School of Design and Art<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&#8216;Intense&#8217;
