On Wednesday night, Curtin graduates Jake Sturmer and Anthony DeCeglie won major awards at the 2012 Walkley Young Australian Journalist of the Year Ceremony in Sydney.<\/p>\n

Jake was named the 2012 Walkley Young Australian Journalist of the Year<\/a> and also won the television category for his investigation into systemic sexual abuse at the government-run Katanning Hostel.<\/p>\n

Anthony won the print category for his story Karl in Fire Fallout; a story that detailed how WA Police Commissioner Karl O’Callaghan was watching the cricket as the Perth Hills burned.<\/p>\n

Both Jake and Anthony graduated from Curtin in 2008 with a Bachelor of Arts (Journalism)<\/a>. During his studies, Jake volunteered as a newsreader with Curtin FM.<\/p>\n

As 2012 winner, Jake has won a three-week trip to BBC newsrooms in London and CNN in Atlanta.<\/p>\n

Jake and Anthony join a long list of Curtin staff and graduates who have been recognised by the Walkley Foundation, including Curtin journalism lecturer Bonita Mason (Walkley Award in the Best Magazine Feature, 1997).<\/p>\n
