Music is blaring on and off as several people walk up and down the catwalk.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/kathryncaseyfeature2.jpg\" alt=\"Kathryn Casey's collection Ignore The Message\" \/><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, 'Segoe UI', Roboto, Oxygen-Sans, Ubuntu, Cantarell, 'Helvetica Neue', sans-serif;\">Kathryn Casey&#8217;s collection Ignore The Message<\/span><\/p>\n<p>There are only three hours until the start of Naked Minds, Curtin\u2019s Fashion design graduate showcase. The 21 graduating students seem to have it all in hand. Each of them has not only had to produce a collection of work to be shown but also has had a hand in organising the event itself.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe onus is on them to complete the collection and to organise the presentation tonight,\u201d said Ms Julie Calabrese, one of the sessional lecturers in Fashion and Textile Design at Curtin. \u201cFrom an industry perspective, it\u2019s really impressive what they have done.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/ivaarapovicaviaryfeature.jpg\" alt=\"One of the designs from Iva Arapovic's collection AVIARY\" \/><br \/>\nOne of the designs from Iva Arapovic&#8217;s collection AVIARY<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe designers are grouped in similar themes,\u201d Sophia Lenzo, one of the graduates, said as she supervised the hair and makeup section. \u201cWe have sleek, dark, messy and romantic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Many of the graduates have received accolades for their work. Cordelia Gibbs won the Ready To Wear Menswear Category at the Perth Fashion Festival 2013 Student Runway event and Gautam Kapoor won the TISA Award for Dye and Colouration this year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI created my own digital prints for my designs,\u201d Mr Kapoor said. \u201cI always design with this strong career minded woman in mind.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey come in very young not knowing how hard the industry is or how to construct a garment,\u201d said Mrs Jo Quake, Technical Officer for Fashion and Textile at the School of Design and Art. \u201cBut they figure it out quickly and they grow into their own identities and create amazing work.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The students\u2019 backgrounds do influence their designs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMine come from my ethnic background \u2013 I\u2019m half Sudanese and half Italian,\u201d said Ms Shahira Salih who grew up in the modelling industry and is hoping to get work experience as a designer overseas after graduation.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/shahirasalihhajenabridofeature.jpg\" alt=\"Shahira Salih's collection Hajena-brido\" \/><br \/>\nShahira Salih&#8217;s collection Hajena-brido<\/p>\n<p>Each collection had a concept that was researched heavily. Ms Lenzo\u2019s collection was titled Immersion and was inspired by all things aqueous.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe concept is water \u2013 I grew up on a boat,\u201d she said. \u201cSo there are a lot of soft, silky fabrics and bright colours and some of my own prints.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sophie Tudor-Roberts\u2019 concept was part political.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI began looking at the suit, the shirt and tailored garments as a representation of society\u2019s narrow idea of beauty,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wanted to push the boundaries away from the traditional.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Awards were handed out after the collections were presented with Jessica Moro winning the Curtin Designer Fashion Award. Ms Gibbs won both the Sericin Silk Design Award and the Fashion HUB Knitwear Design Award. Mr Kapoor won the Sheila Magazine Emerging Designer Award, Kezia Soedjono won the X-Press Fashion Graduate Award and Emma Kalotas won the Curtin Colour Award.<\/p>\n<p>Lucy Aboagye won the Gerber Technology Accumark Training Prize and was selected for the 2014 Banshu Fashion Textile Program. Kathryn Casey was selected for the JENYSIS Cultural Exchange program in Japan.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s really significant \u2013 they all have different backgrounds,\u201d said Ms Calabrese. \u201cAnd three years of hard work is a huge learning curve \u2013 by the end they are very relieved.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And sitting on the steps backstage while the awards were announced were 21 tired, happy and relieved future fashion designers.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/finalefeature.jpg\" alt=\"The finale of the showcase at Naked Minds 2013\" \/><br \/>\nThe finale of the showcase at Naked Minds 2013<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s not all glamour and glitz in the fashion business.
